EV general discussion

I used to see an old Defender round these parts running a green stripe on the numberplate. First time I saw it I assumed it had an EV conversion... then it accelerated up the slip road "rollin' coal" and it became clear it was very much an ironic for the LOLs addition.

Ah, giving the Police a reason to be pull you over for the lols, smart thinking.

I see VW are finally pushing LFP on to all their current line up starting 2026, wonder if they'll pass on the savings to the customer or just take the profit, assuming they are making a profit still.

mercedes also putting them in new CLA, with some criticism that the cost of tooling up/backing both horses increases cost of both types of car, versus bmw
albeit new byd blade lfp's sound as though they are closing the gap on energy density, plus 25% was it - against li-ion.

Again this evening, Alpine now blitzing tv advertising with a290, us freeview viewers obviously the target demographic,
ruining their aura of exclusivity; a390 building upwards as suv fixing rear legroom, and lexus increasing the wheelbase to achieve the same.

Most consumers don’t care or even know about LFP. Interestingly the second hand buyers seem more bothered about it ?

Well if they don't reduce pricing they are going to incur some heavy fines. They are well off the 28% run rate required from what I can see and are resorting to pushing the lower range models. I l keep a close eye on the lease deals and I don't see anyone being particularly aggressive with their EV pricing. I actually think we are approaching a crisis in automotive and I expect there to be existential pressure on some major OEMs in the next 18 months. China market is melting down, most of the western Oems have been caned in the last 2 years and now BYD is leading a price war. Add in Trump's meddling with tarrifs and anti EV stance and you have a really bad mix. The Koreans look ok but the Nissan, Honda and Mazda are all going to be in trouble. As for the Germans - that's coming apart too. Tough times ahead.

Nissan resorting to "super" discounts but still struggling to be competitive, though they are better cars they've priced themselves out of their market / can't compete with the brands which are simply adequate enough.

Picked up the Cupra Born v3 77kWh eboost yesterday and I am impressed with how it drives, the efficiency and even how comfortable it is on 20” alloys.

Coming from a lease I-Pace I will not try to convince myself the Born is just as premium, but the handling is close even if the performance isn’t. Build quality is also very good. It’s actually better in some areas than the I-Pace, particularly the front seat control housings which are exceptionally creaky on the I-Pace.

The used market being the used market meant compromises of course as you will rarely get the spec you want in your preferred colour. Having said that, Cupra are doing what pretty much every manufacturer does and limit options behind “packs”. Even smaller alloys cannot be specified when building your new Born V3

This particular car is in Aurora blue, 4 seat version, Beats audio and cargo pack (flat boot floor with space under the floor) and a 77kWh battery. What surprised me given the July 2023 build date and almost 19,000 miles on the odometer, was the SoH showed 99% within +/- 1% margin of error. I was hoping for the higher end of between 92% and 95%.

One thing the I-Pace taught me was a slick modern UI is overrated, so with that experience I find the Born UI is not as bad as made out by the press, even the haptic steering wheel buttons are fine but I drive with my hands in the 10 to 2 position.

It does feel a bit silly saying “ola ola” to activate the voice commands though. :)

Steering wheel button does voice! Saves you having to say that out loud lol

People actually the use voice control in cars? :D

I use Siri on CarPlay but native voice controls on cars I thought were always a bit crap.

Same here but I do give them the benefit of the doubt now and again. The voice commands on my wife’s Volvo C40 is actually very good.

I think voice controls are becoming more popular with people who hate touchscreens on cars where things like the temperature controls are touchscreen based :p

Exactly what they are best for. This is even better than a physical button to be honest.

On our C40 I can say “Hey Google, set the temperature to 21 Celsius “. Or “hey Google set fan speed to 3” etc. I can even switch one pedal drive mode on and off using voice commands.

The one in the Polestar is really good, but it is Google Assistant and can do most things you'd want, change temps, set nav destination, play an album on a music app, ask general questions etc before this my experience was pretty poor though.

Yes, I use it to navigate, make phone calls, answer text and even to open and close our electric gates.
Far safer than using any touchscreen...

The new VW ones have some sort of ChatGPT assistance (the facelift sadly, not the car @ICDP bought) which I think is probably as capable as Google Assistant

Yeah, will no doubt keep you updated on how good or bad it is. One thing of note is that I lucked out with the Beats audio. It seems the older pre face lift cars also only have front speakers as standard. The beats audio was an upgrade option with updated speakers and rear speakers.

I like the fact the USB-C ports are powerful enough to charge a Switch or Steamdeck. The ones in the I-Pace were very slow and weak in comparison. Who knew people would want to charge a mobile phone or other higher powered devices.

Why wouldn't you use it? I have great conversations with my Astra.

"Hey Vauxhall, set the temperature to 21 degrees"
"........................... SORRY DIDN'T GET THAT"

"Hey Vauxhall, set the radio to Radio X"
"........................... SORRY DIDN'T GET THAT"

"Hey Vauxhall, navigate home"
"........................... SORRY DIDN'T GET THAT"

Fantastic bit of technology.
