Pro Cycling Thread 2023

Profile for the last stage of this year's tour and they are including 3 laps of the Montmartre climb from the Olympic road race. 1.1km at 5.9%.

Pog's going be up there like a rocket isn't he? If he's in yellow and can win solo on the Champs-Elysees, that's a potential career highlight IMO.

Cracking finish in the Giro. Looks like Simon Yates might be riding into pink 7 years after losing it on the Finestre. He's being towed in by Wout van Aert after taking 1'41" out of the leader.
Pleased for the lad.

Yup, magic stage.

UAE and EF should be embarrassed. Del Toro and Carapaz playing games of "I'm not putting in effort", whilst Yates rides off to find Wout who gave him loads of efficiency and recovery time.

Chapeau Simon, Wout and Visma.

I would say that's a little harsh. I'm assuming they just didn't have anything left... I can't imagine either had energy left in the bank but they chose to throw it cause they didn't want to pull the other.

I don't know. I think they just refused to work together. They didn't even give it a go.

Yeah, I agree there, but I can't believe Del Toro let it go simply because he had a strop? I do get it though and agree within reason, it was very odd. Carapaz apparently made comments that DT doesn't know how to race  His point I guess, that it wasn't down to him to catch Yates, it was up to DT... which is fair.

I assume they both knew they wouldn't be able to do it on their own and neither of them wanted to risk carrying the other one and having them roar off at the end to the win so they just cut off their noses to spite their face.

EF not so much, they had nothing to gain by taking Del Toro to the line except to keep 2nd, but they tried to do something by hitting Finestre hard and Carapaz attacking, UAE and Del Toro on the other hand, very odd decision making throughout, only way I could see it was that Del Toro thought if he went with Yates, he'd blow up completely and lose the podium to Gee, but surely UAE are all about winning and second is nothing to them.

Enjoying watching the criterium. I am a bit of a JV fanboy but I really hope Remco can challenge for GC at the tour this year. Something about him just draws me to him

Dauphine Stage 4 Album

I took the day off on Wednesday and drove across for the Critérium du Dauphiné time-trial between Charmes-sur-Rhône to Saint-Péray. I took my camera and enjoy the following the Dauphine, which is quiet compared to the craziness of the Tour de France.

Amazing photos!
Thank you. The time trial is a good stage to follow because you know you'll see everybody come past - so it was just trying to find a quiet location to get a photo with just the rider. What you don't see on the photos is quite a strong headwind, which must have been against them for the majority of the stage - so Evenepoel averaged over 50kph with a headwind and a climb.

Anyone following the TDF? Shame for Philipsen yesterday and disappointing that one of the big names is out at such an early stage.

Yeah, been keeping an eye on it. Philipsen is a bit of a knob but that was harsh to go out so early. Vingegaard is looking in decent form so fingers crossed he will put up a good fight against Pogacar. Team is looking solid as well. Shaping up to be a good tour.

Yeah, Philipsen's crash looked pretty brutal. Sliding along the road at that speed can't be fun...

I didn't really see how it happened, but I saw a headline about another rider in tears while apologising.

If it was just the road rash he would likely have continued. Broken collarbone I assume.

Monster effort from VdP but you could see his legs just had absolutely nothing left in them right at the death there. Pogacar looking good. Vingegaard looking good. Looking like it should be a good tour!

Then the TT happened...

Which now makes it relatively boring. I know a flat TT isn't to Jonas' strength and he's strengths will be the HC climbs but I don't think he's strong enough on those stages to make up the minute+ he is trailing.

Though I suspect now if he wants to win and not just finish runner up, he now has to start riding aggressively and can't just follow Tadej home.
