Pro Cycling Thread 2023

Pog was injured early on the season last year which affected his build up to the tour, so pretty much the reverse situation this year and Vingegaard smoked Pog last year. It must hit performance not being able to train

I mean, logically yes. People have been amazed at how good Vingegard has been because of the injury. Many weren't even sure he would be on the tour. I'm simply stating what he has said and the fact that he, along with a bunch of other smashed the Plateau de Baille record this year.

Jesus, Pog smokes everyone and goes past them like they aren’t moving. Let’s not forget he has already done the Giro too.

He climbs like Pantani, accelerates like peak Sagan, power like Cancellara and time trials like him too (even with a motor), and all that with Giro in his legs.

We're either watching a generational talent or, he like others in the Peloton, are on the sauce.

A time trial to finish the Tour feels a bit of a damp squib v the usual ride into Paris and the final sprint; appreciate maybe Nice doesn't have the setting for it though
Having a five minute lead kinda took away any jeopardy. I think it's an excellent way to finish the race Vs the slightly processional Paris finish.

Pogacar is on a worryingly other level. He just took a minute out of his nearest rivals in 33km and looked like he hardly tried whereas Jonas looked wrecked. His level is verging on unbelievable although in sure he's tested more than any other athlete. The biggest concern is that only Jonas looks like he's any where close to challenging him and that's after the Giro victory. I guess the sport has always thrown up these outliers but it would be good to have a for our five way fight for the tour.

Chapeau Tadej.

I think Vingegaard will give a better account of himself next year. Hopefully his team will be back and firing and he will have a proper prep. Pogacar is just a monster at the moment though.

On a slight tangent, its ******* me off how little coverage the BBC gives the TdF. Its barely there on the sports homepage while they have loads of updates on darts FFS. Gold, cricket, athletics. Pretty much everything seems to take precedence over cycling.

Agreed regarding the bbc coverage. I think cycling sport is still fairly niche, but more common than darts.

Vindegaard will hopefully give a closer tour next time. The Visma team didn’t really seem to have any of the control of previous tours and did not seem to be able to support him. Great to have a few different winning teams though. It should help teams get funding for next year.

I didn't realise just how dominant Pogi has been this year. I think I saw that Jonas only won the TT stage last year in the TdF. Thats mad. Pogacar truly is an absolute animal. You can't say that its not entertaining though.

hardly surprising when you look at who was supposed to be in their tour team and who actually went. They have had some serious bad luck this year with accidents.

I'm just watching yesterday's highlights of La Vuelta. I think it's been the more interesting race of the year, thus far. Does anyone believe O'Connor can hang on to his lead? It was interesting a few days ago when he managed to gap Roglic a little, I wasn't expecting that. It's still very early days though and with an average of 3,700m each day this week a lot could change...

The route this year is brutal. I hope he wins as it will make a change from Roglic but I have my doubts. I have picked him in my velogames team so many times only for him to drop out of contention, I didn’t pick him for this race so perhaps he might win it.

I would like him to win it but more so for Decathalon and the fact their VR pro bike is so cheap. Just feels like a win for the everyman.

I do think he can do it though. Still has a healthy gap and we're still waiting for Roglic to go rubber side up.

Enjoying seeing Wout get some wins. I'd really like to see him in the rainbow for a year.

Yeah, yesterday's stage was another fun one. Interesting interview with O'Conner after where he effectively said 'well that was fun, I lasted reasonably well, gg wp'.

Today they finish in Santander, which I was riding around myself just over a year ago, so I will be looking out for places I recognise!

If yesterday should have taught BOC anything its that anything can happen and giving up on the GC is just stupid when Roglic seems to be rather partial not to be rubber side down at all times.
