Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

Pensioners earing less than £35000pa get it. Above that level it is clawed back.

Yeah, I imagine life must be tough for all these pensioners on £35k income especially if people own their own house with no mortgage....

Median pensioner income is just over £16000pa. Over the £11600 previous means test but below this new one. I would also reiterate the allowance was a Labour one introduced by Gordon Brown and specifically not means tested... This level seems more adequate as it only excludes the top 25% of pensioners. It also makes great sense to use HMRC on the claw back rather that the benefits system requiring a large civil service input and complex forms to complete.

HMRC is only efficient on PAYE for personal taxation.

I'm kicking myself a bit now for locking myself into EDF's Ensure Tracker Sep25 tariff. There's an exit fee of £25.00 per fuel, but there's another tariff with EDF which would save me about £100/year.

This is why I'm always hesitant about fixing prices, because you never know when they'll come down - and when they do, there's normally an exit fee per fuel to urinate on your chips.

I'll see if I can sweet talk EDF tomorrow, but I'm not too hopeful.

The majority of the people will be on PAYE. Alll HMRC will be doing is looking at total income of an individual and deciding whether or not to claw back the WFA through taxation.
Not pensioners though? Therefore they will now have to fill in forms and create mountains of paperwork for HMRC. Not sure there is any cost savings here vs just non means tested application. Still. Playing to the crowd I suppose...

Just answer 243 questions and you get it. Simples.

has anyone actually looked at a pension credit form?

Yes there are a lot of questions but those questions are straight forward like name, DOB etc.

They have to ask about all the different types of income or capital a person may have to ensure you are eligible, you don’t have to answer questions which are not applicable. Given you are applying for pension credit, you probably don’t have much income or capital.

To get Winter Fuel Allowance under Rachel's U turn, you don't need to claim pension credit. You just need d to have a proven income below £35k. I have three incomes totalling below £30k which HMRC know about and are informed about every year, the only thing I have to do is tell them of any savings income each year which they are also informed about generally. No 22 page forms unless I wanted pension credit which I can't as I would not be eligible.

Check if the exit fee is only applicable if you leave EDF. At least for eon, some of their tariffs waive the exit fee if you switch to another eon tariff

I've just switched from Octopus Fixed 12m tariff to their tracker tariff. Hoping I'll see reduced bills going forward. At least there's no exit fee, if it doesn't work out much cheaper or more expensive.

I know of a couple of dozen people of pension age who have non pension income, all of them self declare earnings (or are not declaring anything at all). Its wasteful to just say we give to everyone and take back via tax from those who can afford it. The government will know this of course, but since it was just a bung to buy votes, they will be fine with it.

What do you mean by non pension income because all income is reported to HMRC, Income from taxation, income from private pensions, annuities, draw down, work etc. If they are working and not declaring it then they are breaking the law as is the employer and deserve to be caught.
A tiny minority of pensioners though in my opinion.

I obviously have no idea of how many people it would be, I wont speculate that, just that it is a thing. It is fairly trivial to not report to HMRC when you are paid in cash or equivalent.

Most pensioners are not on the lump or paid in cash for services rendered. It is therefore very trivial to append it to winter fuel allowance or other payment.
It is rather more likely for those further down the age scale to be work fit. I know of no pensioners working and definitely not working for cash.

Free electricity session tomorrow 2pm to 3pm on Octopus.
I am trying to work out the sums and I think I will lose out of i do it.
it's car only not whole house and I would have to turn off the house battery and that isn't discounted.
also cig packet maths if i am exporting at 2.5kwh at 15p that will be wiped out too. I suppose I could do it for the good of the grid but it's a bit of a faff to potentially lose money.

You only have to have your car plugged in. So make sure your car is already at 80% and won't charge.

Don't know what the fuss is about over what 50p worth of free energy?
