Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

it was car only not house use for the thing today. that said I would hope if the car actually charged in the slot it would have been 7p
had the car not have smart charged you would have still got the 50p or what ever but all the rest of your usage would have been full price.
Thats only if you are on IOG, if you are on regular go, it was free energy.

Depends what plan you have. Intelligent said car only. Normal Go was whole house.

An hour of the car, chicken in the oven, dishwasher, washing machine and hair straightening (not mine…).

10 kWh smashed, although could’ve been more yesterday with the AC unit running…

I didn't realise that. quite strange that standard Go for a better offer than intelligent octopus go (not that I am bothered)
It will be because they are giving you all hour house usage for 7p for hours today if you plugged in thismorning. I plugged in just before 2 and it planned to charge until 5 at 7p (I cut it off at 3 at the end of the session)..

Yes, the car or the charger will report energy usage. You can see your last charge in the octopus app where you set your ready time
I don’t have intelligent Go so wasn’t aware of what it can detect. I believe the overnight cheap rate applies to the whole house when the car is charging?

yeah everything is cheap usually even bonus day slots. it's why yesterday was a surprise (to me at least)
That is a surprise, it may have included the rest of the house but they didn’t suggest that. Only for the normal Go did they say “Plan to shift any electricified activity into that hour, be it hoovering, laundry, blending up an icy beverage or, realistically, sitting in front of a fan.”

LOL re-organise your life, or moreover the most intensive cooking section around cheap/unpredictable daytime energy slots.
(yes it would be nice to turn on the electric oven - full wack and bake bread/pizza when YOU wanted to >4Kwh, seems a 5090 is on 750W)

so the government is going to waive green levy costs from some industries, there should be protests that the typical £170/pa is not removed from consumers too.

There is no such thing as a free lunch, the things the levy funds still need to be funded. Remove the £170 from one bill, you need to add it no another [tax] or borrow more money or cut other spending.

There is literally a tax on businesses energy designed to make it more expensive so businesses use less of it and that reduces carbon emissions. That is all fine if that’s your objective (not sure I agree it’s a sensible objective) but the knock on impact is it make them less competitive internationally.

No one is protesting

Why are you complaining about getting free energy? No one is stopping you putting on your oven when you want to, you just don’t get it for free.

A lot of businesses can cut their own energy bills by making some simple changes such as switching to led bulbs, switching pc's off instead of leaving them on all the time, turning lights off when the business is closed. It's amazing how many are still lit up like the Blackpool illuminations at night despite nobody being in the building. Many are able to fit solar panels but don't. I know there is a cost up front but it will be clawed back with lower electricity bills. All we hear from businesses is our rent is too high, our energy is too expensive but most won't do anything about it and expect any change to be handed to them on a plate. Sorry but you need to make canges yourself and energy is one of the things you can make a big difference on.

yes cooking is something you cant get around... .but most white goods like washing machines, tumble driers, diswashers have timers. Anyone with an EV can smart charge by plugging in when not using.

its hardly a hassle and just involves minor changes and if that helps keep the grid operating properly and as clean as possible it would take some metal gymnastics to complain about that imo.

the missing part of the puzzle is a house battery of some description. So for our house even things like cooking times etc we can make sure we do not use the grid at any point in the year between 4pm and 8pm (generally the worst time of the day for dirty energy generation)..... For now that does involve the added expense of a house battery but going forward hopefully some people (not all as they may not be at home) will be able to use a small part of their car battery to cover some of this use - Something i have seen you try to cast shade on as well in other posts despite not actually having an EV yourself.

i must admit i find your posts very odd sometimes.... you cast shade and spread FUD over things you have no personal experience of.

wonder about locking in energy prices if Straits of Hormuz get blocked - Octopus 18mth fixed finishes in Oct but could walk.
I'd also like to know if we should be locking into a fix ASAP?

My octopus fixed ends in January.

Looked last night and think I could get a 2 year fixed with Outfox Energy (never heard of them) for £10 pm more than what I'm paying now!

I am with Outfox (the Market) Energy, they are having a minor rebrand. They are always the cheapest for me as a non-smart meter user in the South West.

I am thinking about changing tariff to their current one, even if I take a hit as I am on an 18 month one atm. They didn't charge me for swapping last time but I can't remember if I was in the 56 day end of contract period (or however long is it that us penalty free).

Edit: Looks like the tariffs may have changed since last week-ish (v1? vs. V3). The standing charge has dropped quite a bit, £50 per year leccy and£45 per year gas, but the unit rates have gone up. It would be about £180 more per year on electric and about £18 on gas but a long cold winter would up that. Not worth the risk on those numbers over the March 25 18month tariff.

This is new..

Electricity
Day unit rate:
31.27 p/kWh
Night unit rate:
9.00 p/kWh
Standing charge:
46.98 p/day

Description
Snug Octopus is a smart tariff for storage heaters that schedules charging at the cheapest, greenest times overnight and boosts heating in the afternoon to keep homes cosy.

But Octopus GO is still cheaper!

Electricity
Day unit rate:
29.37 p/kWh
Night unit rate:
8.50 p/kWh
Standing charge:
46.98 p/day

Description
The smart EV tariff with super cheap electricity between 00:30 - 05:30 every night

And on my Octopus GO FIXED

Electricity
Day unit rate:
28.27 p/kWh
Night unit rate:
8.50 p/kWh
Standing charge:
46.98 p/day

So yeh, want to keep warm in winter with storage heaters, don't bother with a Tarrif that's meant for that, use an EV tarrif instead
