EV general discussion

It almost feels like the Xpower is getting nicer to drive handling wise on b roads, but it's almost certainly that I'm getting more and more used to how to drive it faster in the corners I think.

Probably a confidence thing, as you can feel the weight, and the steering doesn't have the best feel/feedback. However I'm getting braver with it and it's surprisingly complient and composed, especially in medium/high speed corners.

I think the closest review to how I feel about it is Rory Reid's from Top Gear, when he does a comparison between it and the fiat abarth electric. There is certainly some fun to be had (beyond the insane acceleration), and he's absolutely right about it feeling slightly playful/being able to feel it moving under you at times.

The above is probably the most reasonable take on the car. Many are just like "lol complete golf cart, not a hot hatch at all", which i don't think is true, and is probably people jumping on the "EVs are no fun to drive" mantra. No, it's not as good as a golf GTi or type R etc, but there is still some fun to be had in the corners, alongside the silly power.

Looking forward to more affordable EV hot hatch offerings in the future. No doubt they will keep getting better, especially with solid state batteries to keep the weight down etc.
Must be a different part of Surrey to me to actually be able to test the limits in any "medium/high speed corners" :D

many of our Cambs corners are ruined by potholes&repairs, but that's a handling challenge too
sandys will you be testing a alpha junior velocee ? vicariously - for others on company lease plans, imagine those will figure.

cable cross section 10mm2 @30m sounds like a two car option .. hmmh my drive isn't big enough for 2 cars, but could let my neighbour use the the other half.

The Renault 5 looks like a good package but not one I have any experience of, be interesting to see how the Micra turns out though I can see it struggling to make sales as I don't believe the core of the old Micra market is ready for a pure EV and it doesn't really stand out against the competition from what I've seen so far.
I had a call from my local Renault dealer recently, as i've had Clio's from them previously, to ask if i wanted to consider the R5 Turbo 3E, it looks like a right machine, but when i saw the pricing "From £140,000" i declined. :D

I do find my current EV can be driven spiritedly though. Certainly drives nicely...!

The R5 is a nice package with decent ride for its size and a nice layout inside, software is nice too with a good mix of useful physical buttons, I particularly like the Perso button for custom safety config and another button that seems silly and pointless as you can achieve the same result many ways but the set cruise to speed sign button was a nice addition on the wheel, bit better than having to cancel/reset or go up down in 5mph increments, such is the frequency of speed changes around my way that is a nice convenience feature, sure you can get the car to follow speed signs but they can be wrong in many places where I drive I don’t want too always.

Bit stalk heavy around the wheel but it’s a but better than the alternative they put in the A290, the sporty version, whose centre console has ruined the car for me as the wider centre console wants to supplant my leg and lacks anywhere to put a water bottle. Shame as it is even nicer than the R5 inside and out, love the blue and white leather, reasonable performance, that console though and the wide sill make it feel more cramped than the tiny A110 Coupe.

10mm is rated 44-64 amps. 2x 32A will be too much. The 10mm2 will be due to the length of the run.

Most likely used 10mm2 to combat the voltage drop over distance..

Ps. Simon beat me to it.
But I see @jpaul knows evs less about electricity as he does evs.
Have you thought of starting an ev channel on youtube with petrol cars?

had checked it out of curiosity before posting , including regulated voltage drop, for the same distance he/I have ...

£140k!!

Lol. Clearly just priced for multi millionaires just looking for collectibles to spend their money on.

A damning indictment on our society that all 2000 will bo doubt be snapped up immediately.

isn't that over half a kilowatt of heat dissipation along the cable?

yes you a right ... hadn't considered that, maybe cheaper to get the electricity board to install a cu in the garage rather than loose a 1kwh per night even just charging one car.
Using your own link needs 16mm2 for 2 cars, not 10mm2
I showed you my workings which input data was wrong. ?
the 5mm2 was my recollection for one car @30m, but as said practically it would need to be a 6mm2 cable

Surely not at £140k

There can't be that much of a market for this. That's 911 GT3 kind of money
iirc its an incredibly limited edition custom job and not at all based on the new R5

in truth i think it looks more interesting than a 911 GT3 - not that i would buy one - but its a toy for people with more money than they know what to do with who want something unique, not a genuine consideration for a new car for 99.9% of people
