I think his car is parked away from the house hence the worrying about whether CAT 5 could be run down an existing conduit while still allowing for a thick enough electricity cable.

TBH the benefit of instant heat is far greater than the ability to pre-heat anyway in my experience. Heated seats and wheel on, screen is clear in no time... off you go.

and the wifi communication persists ? ie car doesn't shutdown wifi, after 10minutes or so from locking it;
from the research I had done it is the security/hacking risk of having permanently on wifi and limitation of existing chipsets that mean most cars don't offer it

yes - can get a combo cable with the cat5 that wifi (and charger) would need, had discussed with builder of my house expect to be able to upgrade from 2.5mm2 to 5mm2 at garage 30m away;
two neighbour alreadt with ev's in similar situations, versus new estate nearby all pre-kitted with chargers has probably 10/20% of ev's on driveways.
 
It almost feels like the Xpower is getting nicer to drive handling wise on b roads, but it's almost certainly that I'm getting more and more used to how to drive it faster in the corners I think.

Probably a confidence thing, as you can feel the weight, and the steering doesn't have the best feel/feedback. However I'm getting braver with it and it's surprisingly complient and composed, especially in medium/high speed corners.

I think the closest review to how I feel about it is Rory Reid's from Top Gear, when he does a comparison between it and the fiat abarth electric. There is certainly some fun to be had (beyond the insane acceleration), and he's absolutely right about it feeling slightly playful/being able to feel it moving under you at times.


The above is probably the most reasonable take on the car. Many are just like "lol complete golf cart, not a hot hatch at all", which i don't think is true, and is probably people jumping on the "EVs are no fun to drive" mantra. No, it's not as good as a golf GTi or type R etc, but there is still some fun to be had in the corners, alongside the silly power.


Looking forward to more affordable EV hot hatch offerings in the future. No doubt they will keep getting better, especially with solid state batteries to keep the weight down etc.

OK not really a "hot hatch" though you can make it drive like one but if you want some fun the Hyundai Ioniq 5n is pretty decent as a drivers car depending how you set it up - though I'm not a fan of simulated engine noises myself.

No doubt, but the Ioniq 5N is about double the price (more so used), so it seems an unfair comparison.

More just general rambling on my part - I see people criticising EVs a lot for being sterile and just a golf cart kind of thing, which they can be, but it is possible to make them fun to drive in the hot hatch kind of way as well.

EDIT: Though I'm not bothered by fake gear changes, I really detest fake engine noises though - there is nothing which truly substitutes the sensation of a great sounding engine - which is often more than just noise.

A bit of both. It isnt completely devoid of feel (and arguably the steering on a lot of modern cars suffers from this), but its certainly taken some time/experience with it to fill in the gaps.

I just hope in the future, there are more and more reasonably priced hot hatch-like EVs, because £60k is a hell of a lot of money, and hot hatches were always traditionally a chance to get into something fast and fun to drive for not that much more than the standard version of the car.

I agree on the fake engine noise thing - terrible idea. I actually quite like the starship-esque sound of EVs when pressing on :p.

It is a hell of a lot of money but only if you are silly enough to buy brand new. However the iconic is far from being a 'hot hatch', I'd describe it as being more 'hot bus'..

Have you seen the used prices of the ioniq 5 N too?

Cheapest one on auto trader is £50k...

It just wasn't a realistic proposition for me in any way, and wasn't a realistic comparison for a car that could be had £30k cheaper.

I can connect to the car anytime through the app using WiFi.

The 5 maybe but they made the 5N so you can set it up to be quite hot hatch-a-like to drive (sure there are a lot of ways it isn't a hot hatch). I was actually quite tempted to get one at one point but I can't afford to spend that kind of money on something I'm not using most of the time and I can't make an EV work for me most of the time as things stand.

The fake engine and gear stuff is good IMO, I appreciate the cues and interactivity when pushing on, for me the 5N is just a bit too big and bit grim inside for the money, if you want a quiet non interactive EV there are plenty of choices. I have been trying all the small EV hatches and they are not quite there either, interestingly I drove the A110 after testing the A290 and came to the conclusion that if a sports car is going to have an auto that isn't very good tied to an engine that sounds that bad you may as well be in an EV :cry: I guess I probably needed more time with it as I wasn't feeling the A110 hype train nice and compact though.

The Renault 5 looks like a good package but not one I have any experience of, be interesting to see how the Micra turns out though I can see it struggling to make sales as I don't believe the core of the old Micra market is ready for a pure EV and it doesn't really stand out against the competition from what I've seen so far.

6mm is minimum for ev charging
