17 years since my last build, advice please

I would buy a 265k over a 14900k for non gaming tasks for sure. It’s way more efficient, it’s not prone to all the 13/14th gen issues. It’s also sensible value. I wouldn’t use an Aerocool PSU if it was given to me for free, let alone in a system you want to keep for many many years. That Phanteks 750 is a much better unit.

I can't get to sleep and Mrs Sexy sent me back downstairs.
New list and I presume I need thermal paste?
I want to keep the case as small as possible and I want a 5.25" external slot.
Do I really need a PA120 for CPU cooling or can something smaller be OK if I'm not overclocking?
Also is the Gigabyte OK, my last Gigabyte is still going after 17 years?
All this stuff is in stock, how long do you have to wait for Pre-order?

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £729.89 (includes delivery: £0.00)

I cannot speak for the motherboard.

The case is very poor value, I understand you want an understated black box but the airflow is going to be awful and cooling can be important. I'm not even sure at first glance it would fit the PA120, and for reference in terms of price/performance it's more or less the best thing on the market right now and beats out HSF's 3-5 times its value. Also, you do not need to buy a tube of paste as the Thermalright comes with a tube of its own which is about on par with MX4 and good for 3-4 applications.

I'd not personally touch Aerocool PSU's, they once in a blue moon launch a good unit but they're very much more miss than hit to the point they make Kolink power supplies look good.

If you really, really don't want a window on the case you can buy black wraps you could apply to the Kolink Duo case mentioned by @tamzzy, it's a much better purchase and you can turn off the lights.

What about these PSU's, any good?
That Phantek is not in stock and no idea when it would come, I know the other Phantek is £105 but I wasn't expecting to pay that much.
I'll take on what you say about the case.

there's literally a fiver difference between the phanteks 850w and the ones you listed.
if you're fine to wait, then wait for the 750w, it's the best value. if you don't want to wait then stump up the fiver

These are some cases I often spec for quiet/black builds.

I've never looked at be quiet much, but they also do some.

Tricky nowadays, I believe the Pop cases have one in the bottom and they do a side panel version, but be careful because there's a number of variants. An external drive (via USB) gives you many more options.

I would strongly recommend you do not downgrade the cooler. The single fan coolers are fine for lower-end i3/i5 CPUs, but this CPU can use a lot of power when under heavy load. The peerless assassin might already need a bit of tweaking for best results.

The first one is built by Helly and it isn't bad, but definitely built to a budget.

The second one is better than the G12 GM, but the latest Focus didn't review that well on hwbusters (many niggles), so I'm not that keen even though they're better equipped than a lot of PSUs.

The be quiet is the highest tier unit and longest warranty (7 on the Core, versus 10 on the 12M), but they don't use what I'd consider "top notch" components even though they're rated A-tier on SPL's tier list.

looks good. the only thing i'd want to know is if you need more than 32gb for your photo/video work.
64gb may not be a bad idea if you have the budget for it, and if you already forsee needing more than 32gb in the not too distant future
ddr5 don't work (as) well with 4 sticks, so you're better off sticking with 2 sticks of ram instead

I suppose I could get it up to near 4 weeks State Pension money.
When Mrs Sexy asked how much I said it was less than 4 weeks :)

OK one last daft question, before I buy, will I notice a significant improvement over my current system?

CPU
Intel Core i7 2600K @ 3.40GHz 47 °C
Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology
RAM
16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 668MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. Z77X-D3H (Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz) 28 °C
Graphics
BenQ GW2760HS (1920x1080@60Hz)
Intel HD Graphics 3000 (Gigabyte)
Storage
232GB Samsung SSD 750 EVO 250GB (SATA (SSD)) 36 °C

Will OCUK Forums load in faster and Excel come up quicker?
Oh and will my video and audio editing speeds be improved massively?
