NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - Technical/General Discussion

The recent hot weather is almost making me second question my purchase of a 5090, lol. My motivation to play PC games isn't fantastic at the moment with it potentially funneling even more heat into my already boiling room. I'd buy an aircon unit but there's not really space. This weekend is going to be murder.

Just get an aircon unit. I have one in my room and it's a lifesaver.

They usually need to be next to the window though right? That's kind of the issue, there's not much space next to the window
Measure exactly how much space there is for an aircon unit and find the one that fits. Alternatively you can even get one built into the wall if you own the place.

Well, it's a possibility at some point, but probably not this minute. There's other considerations too, with curtains/blinds etc. As for wall units, we own the house but I doubt thats a very cheap option.

Cheaper than some 5090s :D

I guess you need to decide how much being comfortable in your gaming room during every increasingly hot Summer is worth to you for the next... decades.

Trust me if it was my decision I'd have gotten one yesterday and sorted out the fixable issues on my end, haha. The issue is, it's not. The lack of space is due to stuff that isn't even ours. There was a death in the family and people need to collect stuff but people drag their heels. So that's the big issue, it's largely out of my hands for the moment, if that got sorted I could work through the other issues better, like sorting out the window itself.

To be fair that is a lot cheaper than I was expecting, haha

+1 for aircon. I have a portable one with a hose out the window. The first year i sealed the window but this year just leaving it unsealed. Not as effective but good enough. What’s not good, is looking at my electric meter app with AC on while gaming with the 5090. Seriously painful -_-

Edit: bought the aircon before the 5090. Anyone that lives in an apartment block will know what kind of pain comes through the windows every summer :D

Yep when i lived gravesend south faceing floor to ceiling windows it was strip to your shorts time if i wanted to game. Could not imagine a 5090 in that flat. It was murder

Much cheaper. You don't need a 6kW heatpump for a bedroom with a gaming PC in it, and in fact it would not run as efficiently as it could due to being overkill. 6kW is what you use for your lounge or other large open areas etc.
2 or 3kW would be enough and save several hundred pounds. I've got a 3kW heatpump in a room with a PC that has a 7950x, RTX4090, 55 inch OLED plus 34 inch OLED screens, multiple laptops, multiple speaker setups, playstation, xbox and nintendo consoles and in the middle of summer the 3kW is capable of keeping the room at 18c with the heatpump's fan also set to quiet mode so its silent

In general that price also looks kinda high for me, but I know that installing air to air mini split heatpumps in the U.S is also very expensive because its not as common there and installers can get away with reduced competition, so maybe you have the same issue in the UK. Down under mini splits are in almost every house and very popular and have been around for many years now, so prices are quite good and there is a lot of competition among installers - converting to pounds, it cost me 2500 pounds for parts, material and labour to install a 3kW system in the gaming room and 6.7kw system in the lounge (2.5k for both including taxes) and both systems also have a 7 year warranty.

Try playing PCVR in an attic room in this heat!

I have a portable aircon from when I was working at home but it's just too expensive to use now. I cope by opening the Velux windows, pulling the blinds down and using a tower fan pointing straight at my playspace.

Exactly my situation now… like living in a greenhouse. Did some cooking last night using the hobs and oven. Then had a few beers and put the PC on for a laugh to see how warm I could get the apartment. Think we topped out around 31.5c at 10pm before the air from outside started to balance out the heat :D.

I just got back from Madrid so it wasn’t as painful as it perhaps should have been but warm enough that’s for sure…

Very similar to my current solution, window open, curtains closed to try and block the sun when it's directly facing the window in the afternoon, and a tower fan blowing in from the doorway.

I came home from sports in 29c to a lovely cool air conditioned room and now I am going to play VR. AC rocks. :D
