Buying an electric car, am I mad?

Picked up the MG on Monday 16th, noticed it refused to charge on any sort of AC charger on Wednesday, dropped the dealer an email about the issue Thursday. After some research it appears it's not totally uncommon for the onboard charger in the gen 1 models to fail meaning no AC charge but fine on DC and once replaced with a gen 2 part it's all good.

I bought mine last September and it was 9 months old, it charged no problem off a granny charger.
How would I know what Gen my MG4 is?

Be interested to know this as well. Does yours have a rear wash wipe? Im thinking maybe all X Power's are gen 2 as they have a rear wash wipe etc

Judging by this thread:

I haven’t had any issues using a granny charger at home, or the 7.2kw AC chargers at work either yet.

If you've got a rear wiper/one pedal driving/18 inch wheels it's gen 2/MY24. That's for the SE and Trophy don't know about xpower

I see. I'm assuming all x powers are gen 2 then as they all have the rear wiper, one pedal driving etc.

Mine was registered Nov 23, but was probably built a few months earlier I imagine.

I believe he was saying that gen 1 cars have dodgy AC charging ports or something. I guess that doesn't mean they are all bad/won't charge AC, just that the likelihood of it going wrong increases.
Yeah that's the one. It looks like the onboard AC charger is a weak point on the earlier cars.

Update on the car.

I'd been speaking to the service guy with regards to getting it sorted but he didn't have the authority to deal with handing out courtesy cars or dealing with a refund so advised me to speak to the sales manager.

After trying multiple times to call since Wednesday morning but he was always in meetings or with customers and no return calls I drove over after work last night.

Walked in and spoke to the sales guy that had done my handover, sales manager never left his office just passed messages back and forth between the salesman which irritated me but it had taken me 3 hours to get there after work due to accidents on the way home so I was trying not to get arsey just in case it was unreasonable since I'd been up since 4am as well

In the end they said they'd loan me a car but wouldn't know when it was available until Monday, but I don't think they understand that if the issue is what I think it is MG don't just replace it straight away they've got a list of back and forth to go through with MG UK so it could take a week or more.

Now I've slept on it I'll be rejecting the car, it's all ballache and cost I don't need when I can just go and buy another one.

Other than the inconvenience/cost of having to rapid charge I am enjoying the whole electric car experience. Once I can just plug it in when I get home and be fully ready to roll in the morning it'll be spot on.

Your experience is how I suspect the experience of many Chinese electric car buyers goes. The car itself is pretty good (I also have an MG4), but as soon as anything needs to be resolved with it the dealer support can fall to **** rapidly.

Is what it is unfortunately and it's only a car, reject and move on.

R.e the issue it does seem to be more common on the early release i.e pre 18" alloys, one pedal drive and removal of black roof from the trophies. My car has a 3 phase on board charger which seems to be the ones that die, albeit not in my case

I know a couple of people from work who have had plenty of issues dealing with Merc/BMW dealers as well so much so they won't touch the brands anymore.

Seems just to be the way things are going these days.

I've not even gotten as far as actually dealing with MG yet either

Looks like a few gen 2 low mileage examples have dropped into my price range over the last couple of weeks so I'll be picking one of them up I think.

so if you had had a mg dealer on your doorstep , would you have gone straight there and received fast warranty fix.
(obviously carries over to parallel discussion about logic of buying a byd with dealer 120miles away)

- at least my Audi dealer was 80mile round trip and I only spent 2 working days so far, on them fixing air conditioning.

Probably best to get one from your nearest MG dealer if you can. Helps cut out a middle man.

I got mine from an MG dealer 30 mins away. When spending a lot of money on a car i prefer to get one from the most local dealer to save a lot of extra potential faff.
