Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Well i had a knock on the door tonight from some guy trying to flog Virgin Media internet. They have finally got around to linking up this area to their fibre network. I'm currently on a 53Mb/s hybrid connection with BT which isn't the best. Virgin are offering me a 250mb/s package for about £25 a month as a new customer (cheaper than I'm paying now) and faster than anything else currently available. However i have a couple of questions that he wasn't exactly helpful with. Would anyone be able to help with the below:

1) A previous owner of this house put in cat 5e cables and in most rooms and linked them to a central cupboard under the stairs. They also moved the master BT socket into their. This enters the house via one of the upstairs bedroom, goes into large(ish) box and then goes off under the floor boards (i think). I'm guessing virgin can't replicate this, instead just having the connection terminate in the bedroom into the router which is nowhere near anything useful?

2) I have my own router and network set up and want to keep it. Looking around it seems that the Modem Mode has been removed from the new hubs. Has anyone had any luck getting this to work on the new Hub 5x?

3) My past experience of Virgin media in student house over 15years a go was, well awful. Have things improved since are are their still frequent drops outs and poor connections?

4) Do any other ISPs also use Virgin cables, if so should i want for one of them to become available?

1) Virgin will probably run the cable somewhere reasonable if you ask nicely. My engineer ran it through the porch, around skirting and a door frame to get under the stairs. Also, you can have it placed anywhere there's cat5e and just feed back to your router via that.

4) No, only Virgin use their infrastructure :(

Virgin did not want to install as I requested stating it would be extra work, I told them not to bother then and cancel my order, they then found the time to install as requested

I'm so fed up with Virgin. Contract expired, did the usual song and dance trying to get a new deal which was more expensive than the new customer offers on their website, so I cancelled my service with them.

Usually they call me back a week later and offer me something better but this hasn't happened this time (looking online, they've stopped doing this now?!) so I spoke to them again and they won't do anything to keep me. Guess I'll have to let the service disconnect then sign up as a new customer. What an absolute waste of everyone's ******* time.

They genuinely deserve to go bust, such a terrible company

To update....

Took out a new package in my wife's name to get the discount then they miraculously call me the next day offering me a better package.

Now getting 362Mbps for £24 a month. I asked the guy to cancel the newly created package in my wife's name and they'd already done it, so they knew before hand.

The amount of money wasted at Virgin, employing people to play these games with their customers must be huge.

Not sure why me leaving as a customer and rejoining under a different name is a metric they care about but it seemed to work.

Thanks, There is another spot it could go that would make the install easier for them, but that would be less than ideal regarding Wifi coverage. I've also been doing a bit more digging and it seem like modem mode isn't available via the new hub. There does seem to be a way around this but that would be to buy new router that can take an WAS-110 SFP+ module. But they seem expensive.

I did contemplate playing that game, but i can't afford to be without internet due to work and the non existent EE phone signal where i live.

Had the same this time round unwilling to get anywhere close to the ‘new customer deal’. Spoke to multiple people. ‘Best they could offer’ was £48.99 a month for the 1gig fibre (no other services).

Told them I’m not paying more than a new customer (was being offered at £36.99). Told them to cancel as city fibre now in my area so I’ll just go with them as VM no longer the only option.

No calls. Complete radio silence from VM.

Then they send me a random survey to my mobile asking to rate them 1-5 on a bunch of questions about how they did. Naturally I give them a low score and politely explain that being a customer for over 10 years means I’m not about to pay more than a new customer and reiterated that they are no longer the only provider in my area offering 1gig+ options.

Then I get multiple voicemail messages from a ‘manager’ in their retentions team explaining they had received my survey and would like me to call them back.

Called them back and suddenly they could offer me 1gig fibre for less than the new customer deal…….. agreed to a new contract but an annoying waste of time all round.

Why would you not just get City Fibre? As long as you pick a decent ISP you get much faster pings and upload speeds than VM. You can get 1000/1000 for around £29 and no in contract price increases for most ISPS's.

Is £38.77/month a good renewal price for Gig1? I’m being offered that in the upgrade section of the app. Waiting for Openreach to finish off rolling out FTTP. Supposed to be around October when they replied to a fibre enquiry and there is work being done around the town. The fibre checker is still showing by end of 2026 though.

I’ve been with Virgin for 4 years now since they installed fibre on our new build estate (4 years after it was built…) It started off at a fairly normal price for 500mb, a reasonable amount of TV channels and a home phone line (£80 ish)

First renewal didn’t change much, but it included a volt package with the 02 sim and an upgrade to 1 gig. Useful for reasons I won’t go into.

The next renewal went weirdly, and I managed to valve the price on their bundle tool by deselecting the home phone line and it came down to £35. All the same stuff and almost every bundle, for this low price. I later added an extra box for £5.

18 months later and the next renewal comes in - it’s going up to £60. I go on the site and the offer is actually £51, but as the package renewal page is being updated I have to speak to an agent. They do some typing and come back with £161 per month as the next deal available. I politely decline…

I go back on the website and agree to the £51 as it’s still an ok price for me and it gets it sorted for another 18 months. Email comes through, and it says £39 per month with all the contract attachments saying £0 per month till Jan 27.

I have no idea what’s going on…

Ive just renewed at £33 for gig1 and mixit TV

I've cancelled my contract after 10 years with Virgin. They didn't want to try and help with the renewal now that we have city fibre in our area so I've gone with Toob and their 900mb package. 18 months for £25 vs Virgin for £43.

You have CF available and decided to stay with VM? Why?!

Despite the many horror stories about VM I have never had an issue.

In 10+ years I can count the number of times there has been network issues on one hand. Most of which have been for very short periods of time.

I get the speed I pay for and nothing I have connected to their service has remotely struggled.

The only real issue is the song and dance I have to go through every time the contract is up for renewal.

Trust me I have read all the comments about peoples experiences with VM and it’s almost like they are talking about a different provider. Constant Network issues. Install issues. Speed issues etc I’ve experienced none of that.

I have noticed in my area a lot of people have moved from VM to city fibre. Talking to my neighbours the general comment has been it’s alright. No difference to their VM experience. So really the only reason to move to city fibre would be cost. Which is the reason why I initially cancelled this time until VM came back with a sensible suggestion or because I decide that cost is irrelevant and I simply fancy moving up to the 2.5gig option city fibre offer in my area.

I get that, but you are rewarding a company who uses shady tactics regarding price increases and out of contract nonsense by deciding to renew with them.
