Whats the best price vs size hdd

Up to around 20TB you can get capacity at about 2p per GB as new drives with a 5 year warranty. I agree I wouldn't buy an 8TB drive for my bulk storage and it's largely a question of budget and what you are actually likely to need for overall capacity

Yes but are shucked drives reliable? I read that those drives in external caddies are usually recertification models

I have a WD Elements in the caddy 8TB
8TB WD Elements shucked into NAS
16TB WD Elements re certified shucked into NAS

no issues, although the WD Elements 16TB seems a lot louder than the 8TB, seems like they are (more platters?)

A 16TB WD Red Pro is absurd price, probably could have bought two WD elements for one WD Red pro

No they aren't, but they do have white labels the same as refurb/warranty replacement drives. However the reason is purely there is no point putting fancy "retail" coloured labels on drives that aren't normally seen.

No they aren't reliable?

Or No to reply so you are saying they are reliable?
No they aren't necessarily recertified.

They should be as reliable as any other, although the warranty on external drives is normally shorter, taking into account the fact that being bounced around in usb enclosures adds additional strain

The largest true 5,400 rpm drives are 8TB. Larger ones where the manufacturer has claimed they're 5,400 rpm have universally turned out to be 7,200 rpm IIRC, hence a lot louder.

8TB 5,400 rpm are therefore the only drives I personally consider and I would pay a premium for if necessary, as I love the silence. I've got a 7,200 rpm drive as well, but I have to keep it in an external caddy and switched off when not using - PITA.
