Kidney Stones

If you have fragments at the lower end of your ureter, how will the stent help pass those? It runs from the kidney all the way into the bladder. I imagine they'll pop out once the stent is removed
i think it helps as it keeps the VUJ open and prevents issues of distal ureteric obstruction and backpressure buildup (which can cause infection and knock off kidney function, especially combined with all the antinflammatories you take because it is so sore!). An alternative to help stones pass when there isn't an obstructed kidney and the stone is likely to pass by itself is medication - tamsulosin - it works a bit but can give you a really dry mouth which isn't pleasant.
rough guide re stones 0-5mm will pass on their own, 5-10mm should pass spontaneously but might need intervention, stones >10mm are unlikely to pass on their own and need urology input

ive had a kidney transplant 18 years ago but about 3 weeks later i had the worse pain and cramps ever and was so sick it was half a bucket full. It even felt like blood stopped flowing. Docs thought that was kidney stones from transplant.

The pain seems to come after laying down for a while. I take a codeine when it comes on which makes me really drowsy, luckily i wfh and am not that busy at the moment.

I assume the pain means things are on the move? How many more days must i endure this.

I had a stent fitted in my ureter due to a small blockage, which was 2 years ago. After suffering with some discomfort recently in my lower back I made an appointment with my GP who referred me for an ultrasound. I had my prostate, bladder and kidneys checked, waiting on the findings now, but apparently I have an 8mm kidney stone causing a blockage.

Is the laser treatment done whilst asleep or a local?

I find ibuprofen to be the best - basically the strongest you can get over the counter, I've had no joy with codine or ketamine dealing with the pain.

For me, the pain comes when a stone is on the move to the bladder - I've drunk as much as 7 litres to help it along, when it gets into the bladder, it just feels itchy.... then you've got the wait for it to come out. Luckily the last few I have passed have only been a few mm in size - but passing them gives an instant euphoric relief of pain.

that is a calcium oxalate stone (commonest type) , they are spiky and you can see why you get haematuria when they scrape their way down the ureter!
i'm in tomorrow for the 2nd time in 2 weeks for laser lithotripsy of a 31mm stone they couldn't get out in 1 go......
having a JJ stent left in isn't fun either...
Yeah, I felt that...

The laser is under general. Stent removal under local.

Not necessarily. The pain could also come from a blockage - as your kidney tries to push urine down the blocked ureter it hurts like someone's parked a bus on your back. In my case it got a lot worse pretty much immediately after drinking any fluid.

Not had any pain since thursday. Some burning after weeing and it lingers a bit but its nothing compared the pain i was having. I wonder if that means i have pee’d it out?

Had a 4.6mm kidney stone in 2014, worst pain imaginable if you have never had one. Gas and air + pain killers did nothing, only when they gave me morphine did it go off. Nurse said she'd had one and it was worse than child birth.

****** it out a few days later, went 'clunk' when it hit the toilet.

There was a guy on the ward who had a 9mm stone and he was waiting for it to be lasered!

Did anybody follow the urologists advice and take lemon / cranberry every day afterwards? I havent and 11 years later no reoccurance

I have kidney stones in the right kidney and a?bozniak 2F cyst. Two weeks ago we went to the ww1 battlefields in France. On the Wed morning I suddenly got an horrendous constant pain in My left back and groin. I went to the A&E at Amiens hospital and they said probably kidney stone and gave me painkillers and sent me away. I didn't want to ruin everyone's holiday so I just kept taking co codamol every 3 hours. I was sick and couldn't eat. we came home late on Sunday. I went to A&E on Monday morning and they ct scanned me to find I have lots of stones in both kidneys and a 7mm one had moved and blocked the ureter at the junction leading to the bladder. They admitted me as my kidney function was very low and the leftvone was enlarged. They did a ureteroscopy and lazered the stone. Because it was blocked for a while there was sludge buildup and he couldn't see the other stones to get them out so I have to go back twice more to finish the left kidney then do the right. They left a stent in for a week and I had that pulled out last Thursday. I've had terrible pain everytime I pee since and I panic when I need one. Getting slightly better each day but the pain has been off the scale.

I got prescribed some effervescent citrine tablets to help, but I only tried them for a week, as they caused the runs

Got a urology appointment next week, so I'll see what they say - funnily enough, I've got a stone waiting in the bladder, about 6 litres down and it still hasn't come through the system

My dad is in A+E with suspected kidney stones on one side.
I hope not too serious.
He had them before and ignored my advice not to pile salt on his food but he never listens.
