How much is your water bill?

since getting a new smart water meter (replacing a dumb meter) my bill has rocketed. the old meter must have been faulty. last 2 bills were £192 on 1st June and my 1st of august ones is £187

all my bills on the old meter were £60-£100 a pop so at least doubled

(that includes sewerage)

that said I am considering querying it as I don't feel I use *that* much water. family of 3 though with a lot of washing and showers

Guess your not on a meter then? I dunno whay people are so adverse to them unless they take half hour showers, leave taps running when cleaning teeth etc?
On meter here.. was £60 before. I suppose we are heavy users but Southern water took the mick this year.

£180 a month because they didn't bill us for 2 years and it was supposed to be coming out of my wife's account and she didn't notice the lack of £38 going out.

Ours is super expensive now. Thankfully our usage is low.
Look at the jump in cost with the price increase.

What you've got to remember now though is that they are going to fix all the leaks wasting 20% of the water in our pipes and they are going to stop pumping untreated waste into our rivers and coastline....

We're a 2 person household and our DD is £52 a month.

Two years later, still the same two people, and I get this:

Your previous payment plan isn’t enough to cover your charges. To get your account back on track, we’re increasing your instalments from £63.00 to £175.00 per month starting from 28th September 2025 .

I've confirmed the meter is correct and the reading is correct, however according to our bill, our consumption has gone up 4%:

Here's their justification:

Why have my payments increased?
To calculate payment plans, we use meter readings from the past six months to predict your usage for the next six months. We factor in any changes to our tariffs, outstanding balances and charge you for any extra water you used, beyond our last prediction.

We split what’s owed evenly, so you pay a regular amount each time.

Your payment plan will be reviewed every six months and may change each time.

We will increase your payments if: you’ve used more water than we thought you would; we’ve raised our prices; you’ve underpaid or have debt on your account; or a credit balance had been used previously to offset charges.

We will lower payments when: you use less water than we expected or have an account credit to offset charges. To find out more about how we work out your bill and our recent price increase, visit thameswater.co.uk/understandyourbill

Your new payment plan:

Any outstanding amount from your previous bill date 26.08.2025 £1049.62

Estimated water you will use for the duration of the plan £585.06

Total to be paid over 6 months £464.56

New Monthly payment £175.00

What am I missing here?

Have you tried not drinking those extra 105 cups of tea a day? That should save you £123 a month easy.

Quips aside, it’s outrageous to imply that a 4% usage increase could justify a tripling of your bill.

As for the 4% rise that could be explained away by a bit more watering of the garden, or a leaking toilet stopcock.

Water and Council Tax are the two bills that really boil my wee. At least with the other ones you can shop around, these 2 will just stick the prices up with very little justification or actual benefit to the consumer and there is sod all we can do about it. My Thames water bill came in yesterday and it has gone up from £61 to £110 a month so an 80% increase. I plan to call them later once I have done a manually reading of the meter.

Sounds like you're £1049 behind on your payments based on £52pm DD and the new amount is mostly to pay that off?

Which I'm perfectly fine with if they spread it out a bit more, but their systems are obviously poorly configured meaning that instead of adjusting at the start of the billing cycle, they do it halfway through the year, so I get railed for almost triple the cost.

I've emailed the CEO and asked to be rung by someone who can agree a better way of sorting this.

Honestly I couldn't care less about the money, I'd just pay the lot upfront if they handled this properly, but their approach of just stiffing us like this winds me up no end.

And now they're gonna get the End Boss Karen.

Something has gone amiss somewhere previously to have racked up that sort of deficit, you won't have run that up in 6 months or since the April rate increases.

I think that's a Thames bill? In which case, at those sort of usage rates, your actual bill now (since April) should be about £100 per month give or take I think.

Probably worth digging out previous documents to see where things started to go wrong for yourself

Edit - looking at those numbers again, i'm not sure the right numbers are in the right descriptions

Any outstanding amount from your previous bill date 26.08.2025 £1049.62

Estimated water you will use for the duration of the plan £585.06

Total to be paid over 6 months £464.56

I think it actually means...

Any outstanding amount from your previous bill date 26.08.2025 £464.56

Estimated water you will use for the duration of the plan £585.06

Total to be paid over 6 months £1049.62

New Monthly payment £175.00 (£1050 over 6 months)

So if you were paying £52 but your bill should have been about £100 since April, you could well have run up a significant chunk of that £464 since April and I would guess your bill probably 'should' have been about £60-£65 before April. So there's probably been a slow burn of small underpayment at £52 that's ramped up since the April rate changes.

Southampton based: our bill has gone up a lot. We are at nearly £100 a month for two people in a seven year old 4 bed detached house. We don't have any leaks that I am aware of so I am going to be contacting Southern Water again to see why it is so high.

444 litres per day is a lot of water usage for two people.

Your bills will go up substantially as Southern have had one of the highest rate increases.

Water has gone from £1.95 per m3 to £2.75 per m3, whilst Waste has increased from £2.46 per m3 to £3.79 per m3.

So even without any usage change, your costs since April will have increased hugely.

(Edit - if you use the same amount of water this year, your May 2025 to May 2026 bill will probably land around £1200 on the new rates and standing charges)
