What film did you watch last night?

I've tried to word this the best that I can, considering that it's a school night and your thread email notification replies have woken me up twice now; so if my wording is a bit off/poor, or comes across blunt/rude, I genuinely apologize :)

With that in mind, why would I care about 'the ratings online' - I make my own opinions based on how a movie makes me feel? Not how the 'internet' states I should feel - why would I care if they said something was crap, if I liked it?
Whether it's 'unpopular' or not, it's me watching it...

To be honest, you're coming across like you just echo whatever the popular 'safe bet' internet opinion is, versus making your own - at that point I had to consider even bothering replying, as you're just seeking power in numbers at this point/sounding like a troll? Versus having your own opinion - which I would have respected.

How am I a 'fan of the film'? When I went into it blind, and this was my first viewing?
My review reflected that blind experience, thus a genuine review/rating?

Run-of-the-mill cast? Really?
When has, Phoenix, Wahlberg, Phoenix, Duvall, etc. ever been cast together - I'll answer that, never!
Let alone to deserve a cliche/common casting scenario? This is up there with the greats of "wow I didn't expect them to pair X and Y, let alone Z!"

He is NOT the protaganist? Phoenix is, the entire film focuses on Phoenix, and his retribution, all whilst Wahlberg is in hospital, injured, off scene, so what are you talking about?

The way you worded it, despite me pulling on your misinformation the first time, shows you've clearly got a bias, and some kind of hatred against Wahlberg?

He is NOT the protaganist? Phoenix is, the entire film focuses on Phoenix, and his retribution, all whilst Wahlberg is in hospital, injured, off scene, so what are you talking about?

Phoenix, starts off anti the police, and what his father/brother stands for, and then is forced into doing it to save his brother/father; HOW is this a normal, average acted movie?

I don't get your clearly anti-Wahlberg criticism, which thus taints any other actor?

I get he isn't the best, but he was 'enough' in this, and this is more about Phoenix/Duvall, for you to even care/hate Wahlberg?

How you'd signify the casting as run of the mill, versus the 'typical' cliche casting of it's time/after, is surprising?
I'm sorry, but casting does mean everything, without it, we don't believe/care, so you're wrong there, and taking that for granted?

Based on how you criticise casting, 'The Deer Hunter' and 'Deliverance' are just an easily cast movies too, no? Despite them having a weaker writer/producer/director, they're still overall, near perfect for their time?

I'd be interested to know what film that isn't a cliche, that you deem an 8-10/10?
you going in like you wrting full blown magazine reviews for films. yet you cant tell a average film when you see it ? look at all the reviews online the scores it gets. its just average at best.9 - 9.5 out of ten is oscar never forget in your life kinda film with almost perfect storyline acting camera work the whole shabang. you saying this film is that ? same as say gladiator , godfather, jaws, no. its just a run of the mill wahlberg film. for the masses.

everyone will like different things and score things slightly different but come on this film isnt that good just average. at best. seen many films with wahlberg in which are better.

just to show balance......reviews online of said film

imdb 6.8 out of 10. from 95,000 people average.

Until Dawn (Prime), I actually rather enjoyed this, little bit of Cabin in the Woods, little bit of Silent Hill, little bit of time loop stuff. Would actually make for a good tv series where each episode would be a different night. 8/10

Fortress (2021) - 1/10 (Did Not Finish)

One of Bruce Willis’ ‘aphasia’ movies, and it shows.

It has a different take and setting for a mediocre lockdown/revenge story but the incompetence of everyone and everything defies belief, as does the overuse of shoddy special effects and drumming background music which I assume was intended to build suspense. Weak acting, cheap looking, and stilted cheesy dialogue, especially from Willis who looked to be just reading his lines.

Fell asleep about half way through.

Dragon Blade (2015) - 4/10

A Roman Centurion and his legion join forces with an exiled Chinese special forces unit to build a city on the Silk Road and unify the region through peace.

The plot has too many ideas, most of which are poorly explained and the frequent slow motion scenes and flashbacks interrupt the flow.

Dodgy CGI and costumes but it has a weird rustic style as it represents the different historical cultures.

Chan’s signature quirky fighting style is entertaining if anachronistic and the big final battle at the end with all the different war bands coming together was good.

Brick (Netflix) - 6/10

I’m a sucker for high concept movies which is the only reason I gave this a 6 rather than a 4 or a 5. It’s enjoyable enough but pretty stupid and struggles with the same problem most high concept movies have, not quite knowing how to stick the landing.

I was replying to your response, and explaining why I liked it, and gave it the rating that I did, instead of just being vague or arguing?

I made my own opinion based on me viewing and enjoying it, I couldn't care less if it's slated by people online.
Lets face it, most of the people that frequent film review websites, tend to be very full of themselves, and are usually heavily biased snobs - and when they do give a good review, it's rarely a high number, bar for the obvious.

I was only discussing what made it decent, to me, and I strongly believe the casting was perfect, and there was some decent cinematography, with decent location choices - the final showdown for example, was very well shot/directed, and wasn't dragged out and was 'just right'.

Anyways, we can differ on opinions, it's fine :)

I'll chime in, i've seen we own the night and I will go with average also, 6/10 seems about right, I agree with DG, to score a film 9/10 or 10/10 it has to be a masterpeice that will be watched for decades to come, and be a benchmark for future films to live up to.

That being said there are a few movies I particularly like and would score higher than some, an example would be Drive (2011) I would give that an 8.5/10 easily but I know some people think it's a bad movie, so if you like it then fair enough as it obviously provides everything you want in a good movie :)

You or Bruce Willis?

it was just used to show your score is wildly out there in terms of reality. 100000s of people scored it a 6 yet you scored it a 9.5 out of ten. makes no sense.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) - 8/10

The more mature story and style make this film stand out, mimicking a classic TV special rather than a modern Hollywood blockbuster, and it’s this presentation which reinforces the moral story of family over adventure, although the stars do get to do both.

There’s enough action, drama and good special effects throughout to keep it entertaining, although the formulaic overly high stakes plot did take most of the suspense out of the film.

Hardly any humour, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Minari (2020) - 7/10

While I would agree with many that the film is indeed slow, I found it engaged me right until the end - which I found ends somewhat abruptly.

I'm only posting about it here, because it seems to be a little known film which I think should be watched by far more people. I found some scenes amusing, but overall the film is somewhat down to earth and sobering.
