not as lot of people know that

Hippos walk in the water, gorillas actively avoid it apparently, even walking in shallows spooks them. It was fun checking why neither swim tho'.

'CAPTCHA' stands for: Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.

Not a lot of people know that.

“We’ve got a good word we can use to name this process - now spell it badly and crowbar in the first letter of some of the words to describe it.”

There are more cells of bacteria in your body than human cells

It takes a photon, on average, 170,000 years to travel from the core of the sun to the surface.

The dates 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, and 12/12 all fall on the same day of the week during any one year.

In 1938, Adolf Hitler was Time magazine’s Man of the Year and in 1939, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

A “dancing plague” killed people in Strasbourg in 1518.
A “dancing mania” began in July 1518, when a woman began to dance fervently in a street for about four to six days. Eventually she was joined by about 400 dancers. There aren't any concrete statistics on fatalities, but some of these people eventually died from heart attack, stroke, or exhaustion.

Marilyn Monroe had a higher IQ (163) than that of Albert Einstein (160).

The bushes and clouds in Super Mario Bros are the same, just coloured differently.

All my posted facts within my posts are verified as genuine but feel free to check. I cannot speak for any other people's posts within the thread.
Half of all humans who have ever lived, died from malaria.

Once Charlie Chaplin entered a contest for “Charlie Chaplin look-alikes” and he came in third.

Fold over a piece of paper 42 times and it will reach the moon

54 million people alive right now will be dead within 12 months.

A tree is the opposite of your lungs. Physically and functionally.

If you put all the earth’s ants in one pile, and all the earth’s humans in another pile, the pile made of ants would be bigger (have more mass).

The population of Ireland is still 2 million less than it was before the potato famine, 160 years ago.

Napoleon was not unusually short. The French inch was longer than the British inch, so while he was thought to be 5’2” by most of the world, in reality he was closer to 5’7”, an average height for a Frenchman. (still pretty short though!)

There is a rubbish swirl in the ocean the size of Texas.

Black HP printer ink costs roughly 1,400 times as much as crude oil, gallon for gallon.

Humans have the genetic capability to hibernate.

All mammals are equipped with the genetic mechanisms for hibernation, which can be used as an extreme survival tactic. Read more about the actual science here.

Wombat poo is square.

President Lyndon B. Johnson owned an amphibious car and used to drive guests into the lake to scare them, screaming about brake failure.

A shamanic group in Mexico worships Coca-Cola as a healing drug

The Mongolian Navy at one point consisted of a tugboat and seven men.
If you and another object are in the same orbit and you want to travel towards it, you would have to thrust away from it.

If you could get a teaspoon of a neutron star, it would weigh more than a mountain.

If you were able to fold a piece of paper 103 times, it would be thicker than the observable universe.

Calculating pi past 60 decimal places has no application in the real world because that is all that would be needed to calculate the angle of a planck length (the smallest unit of distance) at the edge of the observable universe.

Sea plankton are growing on the outside of the ISS.

The Sun contains 99.85% of all the matter in the Solar System.

From the perspective of a light beam, it's travel time is instant, regardless of distance as time slows to halt at the speed of light.

If like metals in space touch, they instantly can weld together.

Technically the moon is not a true satellite of Earth because it is affected by the sun's mavity more that the Earth's. Some even consider the Earth and Moon as a binary system.

The man who discovered Uranus, William Herschel, wanted to call it "George".

There is a void 50 million light years in diameter, representing approximately 0.27% of the diameter of the known universe that is completely empty and it is getting bigger.

After returning from space, an astronaut can sometimes be two inches taller from the cartilage expanding in their backs.

Earth is struck by 5 pounds of sunlight every second.

Technically, we live inside the sun.

WISE 1828+2650 is a star that is only 28 degrees centigrade.

If it were brighter, the Andromeda Galaxy would appear six times larger than the moon.

The average density of the universe is one hydrogen atom per cubic meter.

The Sunset is an illusion. You're not actually looking at the sun but rather the light from the sun bent around the Earth due to the atmosphere. The sun sets ten minutes before you see it and it rises ten minutes after you see the sun rise.

It is impossible to write out the numerical representation of a googleplex with pen and ink.

We have no idea what 96% of the universe is.

Saturn would float in a large enough body of water.

Folding a piece of paper 42 times would result in a thickness roughly equal to the distance between the Earth and the Moon. This is due to the nature of exponential growth, where each fold doubles the thickness of the paper.

Conceded on the other one:

The statement is incorrect. While the Sun does radiate a tremendous amount of energy, including visible light, the amount of energy reaching Earth every second, when converted to mass using Einstein's famous equation E=mc², is roughly equivalent to 4.2 million metric tons (4.7 million tons), not 5 pounds, according to Space.com and NASA's Cosmicopia. This energy is equivalent to about 1.73 x 10^17 watts.

The war of the Triple Alliance was quite bad.

In short, Paraguay (which is landlocked) went to war with all of it's neighbours at the same time.

They got a sound thrashing, with around two thirds of the population killed. Estimates at the high end are that up to 90% of the adult male population died.

On the plus side, there was plenty of totty for the survivors.

sure, but you can't just convert photon energy into mass - it doesn't work like that
