Anyone got a decent recommendation for an HRM for a man with a particularly hairy chest? Wondering about a bicep strap as my chest monitor keeps losing my rate

Reasonably hairy chest here - though no Zangief - and Garmin HRM Pro Plus has been quite consistent, never noticed any drops, and significantly better tracking than my old fitbit.

Same. It seemed to be stuck at a max of 180 for a while, not sure if it was calibrating or whatever but I was close to sending it back. Somehow fixed itself and been faultless for a couple of years other than a battery change which is cheap and easy. Highly recommended. Only downside is the fastening mechanism (if you can call it that) has started to splay a little bit and it’s getting increasingly difficult to do up. Looked around for some advice on a fix but best I’ve found is to buy a new strap but for the price may as well buy a new HRM and get another couple of trouble free years.

I'd never trust optical HR. Too many times I've been in the middle of 'crossfit' style gym sessions, and my Fenix has said I'm at 100bpm or so. And then all of a sudden it rockets up to 170.

Although lately it has been much better, but that's the issue. For me it's never fully reliable.

this. Sadly wrist hr with a watch is not accurate enough. Chest strap is the best really.

wrist hr requires you to wear the watch extremely tight to stop it from shifting around, some watches do better than others but my garmin is also jumpy if you actually look at the data.

Happy using my watch for HR when out cycling, have never seen any great fluctuations, and I've been using for a couple of years.

Fenix 7X Pro Solar Sapphire for reference.

Is it a gimmick? Who knows but look at that shiny titanium freehub :D

It's also funny how small things make stuff appear premium quality. Stick the wheels in a printed cotton style bag and boom. You've hit the big time

Haha, you know how few bikes and swapping of stuff I do... Somehow still have 4 sets of 'spare' handlebars on my shelf and don't really know where 2 of them came from!

The problem is there never feels any point moving the stuff on by selling. I'm thinking i'd like to pick up a couple of alloy handlebars/stems at around €30 each to test different sizes before spending on a carbon one, but then i question what i'd do with them!

Yeah, killing me now though as i forgot the tubeless valves, and then i've ordered some hydraulic hoses as need to redo the front brake for the suspension fork. Was going to just drop the whole lot off at the local shop, but think i'm going to have a go myself.

Loved the Zangief reference too! I'm hairy but not particularly 'long' hairy as keep it trimmed. Gets far too long if I let it grow, feels greasy/wet when sweating then. Tend to do a 'number 1 1/2' clippers on my head every couple of weeks and then 1 on the chest probably every month. Maybe a number 2 during the winter a little less regularly for some additional insulation...

But I've never had any issue with HRM pickup due to it, even during the really sweaty sessions. Do tend to not have that much hair under the moobs where I'm putting the chest strap...

Pretty much what I've found with my Whoop 4.0 but moving that to bicep (from wrist) mostly solved the differences I'd seen for my chest strap... But talking Zwift HR intervals during racing/TTT's so might not be as short as CrossFit type stuff?

Got my 5.0 and rode it bicep last night, numbers what I expected but annoyingly my head unit auto-powered off so don't have the comparable chest strap. Will get some next rides.

Yeah, i imagine you need to look like Steve Carrell in 40yr old virgin for it to cause any issues.

I can't recommend Magene, i bought theirs to replace my Garmin but now it just reports 180bpm as soon as i start the ride and takes around 30 minutes to start reading correctly. I'm thinking i'll just pick up a Tickr. it's killing my watch battery life to keep broadcasting the HR from that to my Edge.

Speaking of the Edge (non U2 related). Has anyone looked at battery replacements? Mine doesn't seem to last beyond 10hrs and even less with following routes. Based on this i should be expecting a minimum of 24hrs

It's perfectly good otherwise though and so doesn't seem worth spending a small fortune to upgrade.

I did replace the battery on my old 810 years ago, worked fine for ages after - gave it to my brother who used it too.

was an aliexpress special battery.

Cheers, watched a youtube which seems simple enough. Main concerns are getting a decent waterproof seal. Although less of an issue for me here :p
