What retro things have you done today?

All good, was asking just in case. I've been trying to get that P1 system up to peak status for the last couple of weeks, usb header is the last thing to sort out. Cheers

If you're not in a rush I will be able to check for you at some point! But I can't just yet as everything is packed away while we have building work done.

I might have a manual saved for it somewhere though, I'll have a look.
Hi Akagi,
Sorry to revisit this month's later but just wondering if you ever got to having a look at the USB header? I was trying to get my USB running last night after upgrading the CPU on the board but win 95 wasn't recognising any devices. Hoping I might be able to rule out the connection as a cause. If you have a moment to confirm the Pinout or take a photo of the USB connector in place that would be amazing.

Heya, which board was this for?

Which release (version number) of 95 are you using.

Iirc you need OSR2.1 (4.00.950 B) as a minimum for working USB.

I don't know why I didn't check the below website before as I used it to identify my Packard Bell motherboard but I found out what the disk error message (Disk Dur Protage Error) was about and how to work around it:

It's a very useful resource If you have an old Packard Bell system :) I'll try the restore again at the weekend and post my results...

Also, there are different pinouts for older motherboards for USB.

I had this issue with an Intel based motherboard on a Socket 7 machine.

Once I ordered the correct header adapter, USB started working.

I managed to get a PC going with my old AMD Duron 800Mhz that I had as a kid. It's been sitting in a cupboard for over 20 years and now it's the star of the show once again in a Windows 98 build.

The rest of the specs are: Epox 8KTA3L+ motherboard, 256Mb RAM and a Geforce 2 Ti.

I tried it out with a few games briefly - MOHAA, Mafia and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Performance seems about what I'd expect although there is some mad stuttering whenever I enter new areas or go around corridor corners etc. I assume that's the game loading in said new areas - not quite sure why it's stuttering so heavily though. I will have to investigate.

Very happy that my Duron still works though. What a trooper lol.

Nice machine! Its a miricle the caps are still good on that 8KTA3L+ 20 years later . Looking at https://theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/epox-pronix-ep-8kta3l#chips it looks to support XP chips, so you could get a cheap XP chip for a bit of a performance boost. Geforce 2 Ti is a nice card for Win98!

Been taking my time looking for a good copy which also was reasonable in price, made a few offers on different copies and finally snatched this one from far away.

Absolutely loving it, forgot how perfect the Saturn pad is for this kind of game.

One of my favourite games on probably my favourite console. How many of these Japanese releases never made it to the West is still a mystery to me.

I'm looking at slimming down my retro collection, but the Saturn will never leave.

Hi all

I'm reviving my Socket 462 career, it's been 20 years so I may be back for advice at some point.

Already received:

Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro Atlantis
I bought all the Corsair XMS DDR400 C2-2-2-5 I could find on ebay, 8 sticks all 512GB, shame no 256's around.

Currently waiting for:

Barton 2500+
Waterchill

Looking forward to this as a holiday project (will build in test bench)

Also, finally found something new to do with the 3D printer

I have reprinted the label to correctly state "R290X". The QR code links to a review. I have plenty more of these to do.

I was thinking red for the AMD cards and Green for the NV ones.

Before I bought a Japanese Saturn earlier this year I came close multiple times to buying the clear one it looks so nice.

Just couldn’t stretch my budget

I bought a Microsoft Sidewinder X4 keyboard off Ebay and going by the photo's it looked pretty good!

Well, it turned up and by gum, it was dirty ugh!

It was going straight in the bin, but last night; had a beer induced moment and lobbed it in the dishwasher. Woke up this morning and it now looks great.

I was lucky when I got mine, it was practically new and reasonable price. This was before retro gear prices went super crazy.

Funnily enough I wasn’t even looking for a Japanese console at all, but every PAL console I looked at was in really poor condition. I just happened to come across Japanese models on eBay (white and gray versions) which didn’t really float my boat and then I saw this one.

I've had so little time for Retro Computing recently.

I made it my mission to complete Kings Quest 4 on my 386 using the AdLib feature of the Pico Mem card.

I have been following a walkthrough guide. Even with this, it's taking forever. I would never have completed it without this. Climbing around in a whales mouth, digging up graves, using a scarab to protect from Zombies. It's those little things that I would have missed, such as picking up a spade in the corner of the room. Swinging an axe to stop the trees attacking you.. I will get there.

I have never got into adventure games.

Love the visuals but I was always rubbish. I would get stuck and switch to another game.

Never thought I would see another one since I bought my first from here in about 2004! Tape on box, but it's "new" and unused. It's the 3 block version with a triple rad.

Was this expensive?

I have an old Athlon XP socket A/462 which I've transferred into a modern case, only thing is the CPU fan is constantly on full speed and sounds like a hair dryer so after 20 minutes of playing Midtown Maddness I need to switch it off and enjoy some peace!
