A Nightmare on Elm Street (purchased on Apple)
A gang of teens is plagued by dreams that have serious consequences…
Gooooddddamn this film is
so 80s. It’s the most 80s thing of all time, possibly even of the 80s. The way it’s shot, presented, the music, the charming practical effects… yup, it’s 80s. I always have a soft spot for the classic, now seldom-used ‘naive teens in trouble’ set-up, there’s something endearing about it. Nowadays it would have to be edgy, or cynical, whereas this film isn’t ‘self-aware’ so it can have fun without trying to be clever.
Beyond that nostalgia and the excellent premise, some of it is kind of dated, especially the dialogue and delivery that goes from bad to bizarre. On this (re)watch, I had a good laugh at how utterly ridiculous / brainless / terrible that mother character is. Paraphrasing slightly, but we were howling at the following dialogue:
Mother / dad:
“was there any reason why your friend killed her?”
Daughter:
“no… they had a fight but it wasn’t that serious…”
Mother:
“well maybe you just don’t think that murder is serious!!!
” <—- wtf?!
The musical motif that plays over and over feels overdone and I tbh found myself getting a little impatient waiting for ‘the good bits’ - which are very good, including the fun ending.
A good time, not huge amounts to rewatch for though… other than to laugh at the mum and for the ‘good bits’ (such as that classic first death).
Oh, and it’s fun to see Johnny Depp so young. And that seance woman from Insidious shows up as the teacher
Final point - there is a massive fish in their basement, what’s up with that? Would have been a great weapon against Freddy… smack him with that giant fish!!!
7/10 - but being a little generous there for the benefit of the classic iconic scenes. I haven’t actually watched any of the sequels so I’m looking forward to that.
