What are the 30 year old plus gamers playing?

Final Fantasy 13 - playable with a few mods.

I've picked this up maybe 3 or 4 times now over the past 15 years, and always give up after a number of hours. Determined to get through this time. I really like the lore, music, setting etc. A couple of the characters make me cringe, and I don't fully understand the equipment upgrade system.

I forced my way through it on launch. It's probably my least favourite (although VIII is very close) and I never played the other games in the series because of it.
Like you said, cringe characters and I just found the whole premise quite boring.
That said, it had some memorable sections and music, but I can't mention it without spoilers

Ah I quite like 8 - possibly nostalgia driven as 6/7/8/9 were in my real coming of age years and really memorable gaming moments. I guess it too has some odd characters, but I really liked the different battle system.

I'm trying to race through to the steppe area where I remember it opens up a bit. I've added the HD mod and honestly, it's still an amazing looking game considering it's so old. Snow hasn't reappeared yet and that's a good thing :D

Unpopular opinion, but I hate 7, I wasted nearly 26 hours playing the remake (the first part), and it's just such an empty boring world, with lack lusture dialogue from the NPC's, and it's focus is being childish but at the same time pervy to any female and making them look busty but underage - I mean was it remade by nonces?

The plot doesn't go anywhere, I didn't care about the characters, and the gameplay is dire and simplistic at best, with no real pay off. It's the only game, that I've ever given up on, and that really annoyed me because I always see something through, especially if I've put that much time into it.

8 However, I got onto the second disc, and my save corrupted on my memory card, but I did eventually replay it on the PS3 PSN remastered version, but never finished it - because I ended up selling the console - so there was no bad blood there; one day I will buy it on Steam and get it finished.
8 Felt a lot more adult, and the characters actually wear clothes, and it doesn't play as hard into the cheesey childish JRPG format that 7 does.

I did like what I played on the NES/SNES original games, too. I heard 9 was regarded as the 2nd best game on the PS1?

Yeah. I was so disappointed with 13. Played maybe 15% of it maybe. Did not feel like a FF game.

My Final Fantasy journey begun in 1997 with VII. Nothing has compared to it since. Even playing the remake now and as much as I love the visuals and sound, the gameplay just does not measure up for me.

I actually completed Final Fantasy
Pixel Remaster recently on my Steamdeck. Looking forward to playing all 6 Pixel Remaster's

Did you play OG FF7? The remake is not as good.

VIII didn't grab me due to the stupid card draw system. Plus the plot is way way more basic than VII. Though agree remake was boring.
I'm looking forward to playing tactics remake, I was gutted as a kid when I saw it wasn't coming to the UK, wish OPMUK never mentioned it in the first place lol.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of randomly forcing you to play cards in a game, luckily it was optional in The Witcher 3!
The last thing I want to do whilst absorbed in a story/gameplay is decide to stop what I'm doing and trade/play cards

I meant the combat system in general where you had to draw magic sorry from certain points. One thing they all have in common though is some of the best music you'll ever find in a game.

Oh yeah, my bad, it's early, haha!
Yeah that is very annoying, and often you have none to draw or don't have that ability!
Yep, the music is some of the best in games!

That intro though!
IMHO, 8 has one of the best game intros ever, whether you like FF or not! The song choice is perfectly matched too!
The feather disappearing into the sky, then the lightning and it coming flying down as a gunblade! The gunblade, is one of the coolest things to come out of FF!

If they remake FFVIII, I'm all in!

Near the end of Ghost Recon Breakpoint. Played about 40hrs, I couldn't tell you what the story is, it's frustrating in so many ways but I have to finish now but the last couple of boss battles are a nightmare.
