Hello,

I have noticed a little chip on the windscreen on my Mk5 Mondeo. It doesn't feel too deep right now, but I am concerned it may get worse.

Since this car has heated windscreen, I am unsure if I should be using that feature when the weather is cold.

Attaching a few photos to get your opinion on if I can get this fixed. I am ok with DIY or getting it done professionally considering it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Other option being to leave it aalon.if that is ok. This does not affect my view when driving as it is around top mid section of the windshield.

Contact them and start the process of repairing it. Chips used to be free, not sure if they are now, but it won't be much.

You certainly dont want to leave it.
I checked my insurance documents quickly and it had Excess of £25 for repair and £135 for replacement.

Even if it costs £25 it's better than the hassle of having a windscreen replaced.

It looks fairly small, but for scale get a £1 coin - if it fits under it then it should be repairable.
(I know some places say £2 coin, but not all - and the bigger it is the harder/worse a repair will be)

It probably is around 3-4 mm at best. I understand it is hard to tell the scale from a cropped image.

That looks repairable as long as its not larger than what the image sort of suggests, sharp small stone chip.
Given its not spread out yet too, I'd get that booked in for repair asap and avoid driving it to ensure it does not spread further.

Don't forget you do have to declare it come renewal time and it could make a difference (it did when I was looking at whether to use my insurance or pay out of pocket).
In the end it was cheaper long term for me to pay the full £60ish out of pocket. I'd only use insurance for a replacement as that's mega money in comparison.

This is the full scale image of the windscreen with the aforementioned area marked. I did notice some really tiny ones, most likely due to a salt spreader.

I am checking a quote on Autoglass. Please do let me know if there are any others I can approach around Manchester, Cheshire, Altrincham around.

If it is sub £100 repair I would prefer out off pocket too.

I think most places are around the £50-70 mark for a repair. Me and my wife have both used our local Halfords with good results but obviously your milage may vary

Yeah if the repair costs only slightly more than the excess I'd pay out of pocket for the full cost. Not worth the increased premiums for the next five years.

Repair work done today. I am happy with the result and yes it does leave the scar behind. There is no option to clear it. The surface is as smooth as new post the repair.

The entire process took about 20 minutes.

Attaching some photos for reference in future if anyone is intrigued regarding what transpires in the process. :)

LOL, poor guy trying to get on with doing his job while David Bailey sits on his shoulder to document the process :p

Glad you got it sorted but what a load of fuss over a stone chip :D

I did ask if I can get some photos before.

I don't know why you find it fussy. For me it is educational to understand the process as I have never seen this before. A stone chip or a massive dent, in the end we are here on a Motoring thread to assist each other mate. :)

Glad you got it done professionally. I tried one of the diy type kits off eBay many years ago and the chip went from something quite small to a massive crack across the screen! Lesson learned that day :D

Wow didn't realise that was a declarable claim - I did Google too to check that was legit and seems it's a common misconception. Probably worth insurers specifically asking about windscreen damage claims during quotation.

I had a windscreen replacement going back maybe about 8 years ago now, so probably out of reach to do anything about it. Will definitely bear in mind next time the potential costs of a claim vs paying out of my own pocket.

Come to think of it, I seem to recall not even speaking to my insurance company to arrange a repair, it was just a case of entering my reg into auto glass website and they did the rest.
