Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

The story, world and characters carry this but I wish they had the courage to go fully with turn-based instead of adding the arpg dodge/parry mechanics -its a good game but by trying to be Jack of all trades they have fallen a bit short. Some of the battles are just tedious tryting to work out the patterns while taking tiny bits out of their health bars.

I know some people like the challenge etcbut chipping away at a high level mime just to get yet another hairstyle as a "reward" is just meh.

Tbf the mimes are absolutely not mandatory and only need to be fought if you’re really going at it from a completionist point of view. That being said, they’re not actually that hard to fight in that their combos are quite short and simple, so it’s more a question of whether you can execute the parries correctly over and over and over again in order to build up damage against them. They are tedious, yes, but they’re also basically pointless given that as you say it’s just for collectibles. Plenty of games have tedious collectible quests.

The petanks are far more annoying to my mind, as they’re incredibly tough and they disappear after just a few turns.

Pictos can only be looted to be upgraded right?
Can they be farmed or it's a specific drop only at certain times?

It seems you didn't like a big element of the game that lots of people really enjoyed, we all like different things and you're never going to please everyone I guess. Not sure going turn based only would have taken courage, I would have thought if anything including the dodge/parry mechanics did.

There's a lot of QoL changes been added to help people with that sort of thing, being able to retry fights you fail without needing to reload etc.

You can get a mod which greatly increases the time you have to dodgy/parry too, it becomes really easy for those not into the mechanic, pretty sure there's even an automation mod that does the work for you and lets you focus on the TB aspects.

Yup the dodge/parry thing frustrated me as well.

Correct, as far as I’m aware outside of certain bosses picto drops are random. Saying that higher level pictos only give small stat boosts such as health, crit and defence the main stats don’t change.

Thanks for the advice on getting higher lvl pictos.
Explored the continent until i have about 5/6 lvl20+ pictos and made end of act 2 a breeze.

Moving to act 3 now.

Just picked this up sub £20.

Only played about half an hour, basically the cut scenes, but came away impressed.

Might put final fantasy 7 rebirth on hold while I complete this :D

FF7 Rebirth prompted me to buy a PS5 and was my GOTY. That said, Clair Obscura is a better game if you get on with the mechanics, and if not check some of my earlier posts which help with them.

Never thought I'd get on with the French but they pulled it off! :p

This has petered out for me now, loved what I played so far but completed Act 3 and done all the zones I am the correct level for. I don't really fancy flying round the whole map trying to see what world bosses I can actually fight or grinding levels.

Time to stop then, gone are my days of 'I must 100% for trophies/achievs'. Can always go back to it if the urge takes you

I've never been one for trophies / 100% for the sake of it. I'm not much of a replayer either so this will be uninstalled but fondly remembered as one of the better games I've played in recent years.

I used to be bothered by trophies on console but oddly the same doesn't apply for PC games, I wonder if that's partly knowing you can just spoof them anyway on Steam or the fact they aren't so prominent in the UI.
