Morrisons use them to see if you've paid and then the automatic gates at the exit of the self checkout will open using their cameras.

Not bought anything and cutting through the self checkouts to leave? The gate won't open and the staff member uses a button to open it.

Pay for a few goods and the camera on the checkout sees you? You can walk right out.

Or just push the barriers apart slightly for a few seconds and they'll open for you.

Was impressed by the ones at Asda the other day though, looks like they've added some image recognition to it for fresh/weighed items, put an orange pepper on it, pushed the lookup item button expecting to have to search for it and was presented with just orange pepper or carrots, did the same with a couple of bananas and it gave me bananas/lemons/yellow peppers

I don't see the point in those gates. If someone wanted to steal something they could still just not scan it. Or if they are brazen enough, just carry stuff out of the entrance.

I watched a youtube short earlier where a guy just walked into a shop, picked something up from a chiiled section, opened it and started eating it as he walked out. When challenged he just said 'I do what I want' and off he went.
I'm not sure there's much hope.

there's a ton of videos like that, always targetting big chains, Tesco, Greggs, Waitrose! who'll have a policy not to intervene
