Carabao Cup 2nd Round Football Thread ** spoilers ** [26th - 27th August 2025]

Anyway, Amorim isn't doing himself any favours. There's absolutely no point in sticking to a system when the players aren't capable of playing it, not when it's a results driven business.

To a certain extent, can't blame the goalkeeper situation on him as he's not in charge of replacing them. He has two awful keepers as #1 and #2, so the only thing he could have done is play Heaton.

Onana didn't help tonight, but it wasn't the only reason we lost - we were awful everywhere.

I don't know what to say really? Are we just cursed? Despite all the changes (manager, football structure, players), nothing seems to get better.

If he don’t get 3 points against Burnley I don’t think he’s making it to September let alone Christmas!
I doubt they’d be quite that drastic but you never know.
Madness they’ve stuck with Onana, should have been dropped after 2-3 games.
He did, for Bayindir. Look how that turned out. There’s no one to replace him with short of the 3rd choice keeper - which he may well have to do now. Neither Onana or Altay can be trusted in nets.

The penalties were a real issue for me.

It’s like someone elsewhere said: is this Man Utd’s great hope? A guy who can’t bear to sit and watch penalties against Grimsby?!

Feeble.

I think we’re very rapidly approaching the point of no return for him. The next few fixtures are pretty brutal, and we might lose all of them.

I meant right at the start. Right back when he should have given away a pen against wolves. Caused the CL elimination. Had a few windows since to get a replacement in.

He’s terrible. Easily the worst keeper in the league.

After a couple of weeks/months should have just got DDG back as he was a free agent.

At least last nights result takes the focus off Leeds pathetic performance. Farke needs his team to put in a decent performance against Newcastle or he’ll be toast too

We didn't change formation
Ok, it starts to work when you’re playing a league 2 side that are knackered and start to retreat into their own box, and your fresh subs can just walk the ball into wide areas.

His system doesn’t work in the English leagues. All teams have to do is press hard and it falls to bits, we can’t get get the ball out wide, and when central players go forward we are easy to counter.

I've said it in the past. It's a poisoned chalice.

Not helped by silly decision-making. Like not buying a keeper or a midfielder. Inflexible manager. Sacking the dinner ladies. The list goes on. Buying another raw striker. Why did we buy Mount? Ugarte was out of favour by two clubs before we bought him.

I'm not sure why it was deleted from the club thread but I did query why they didn't buy wing backs who are apparently the key to his system?

I also questioned The Rat and his Merry Men. But I am too negative/not sensible...

...but I'm not wrong.

I really have no idea why we didn't sign a keeper.

What did the club think was going to happen? It's was pretty obvious to most people. It's just daft.

Probably because we're so bad at taking set pieces ourselves that he's not really tested in training so he looks OK? And they somehow convinced themselves that he won't make as many errors.

If this wasn't an Ineos appointment he would have been sacked ages ago.

Spent 200 million and we are still no better off. I could 100% accept still having defensive frailties going into this season as Rome wasn't built in a day but you do want to see something going forward at least with that investment. We have spent 200 million on 3 players that got 50+ league goals between them last season and we cannot even break down Grimsby through play.

A moment of brilliance by Mbuemo and Slab head. That is the only reason it got to penalties.

Both Mbuemo and Cunha both had a full pre-season so they should be up to speed but both seem a bit lost.

I really cannot see where we go forward with regards to management.

From watching his post-match interview, maybe Amorim has realised his preferred formation doesn't work for Man Utd and will finally adapt to a different system.

Sesko is another Hojlund purchase, high risk, high potential but nowhere near the finished article. Nowhere near.

Mbumeo and Cunha have now joined a disjointed team, it was never going to be as plain sailing as the stats suggest - although still should be better against Grimsby.

It's also not helped by the keeper being absolutely ****. The pressure that puts on the team.

My take is, either he now realises he has to adapt the system/formation, or he realises he needs to go as his system won't work. Also, whats happened to the Man Utd thread?

Got locked as there was loads of Onana transfer talk that got deleted, along with spoilers for the match. I assume it'll be re-opened
