Steam now requiring age verification in the UK

So far I've just stopped using and service that has asked as I'm hoping the pushback gets this reversed but so far it's not looking likely

It's all for the kids! ... Not to get too political but I am very tired of this government and their invasion of my privacy. If only they put this much effort into investigating the grooming gangs.
I dont know what you mean, I was assured by my Tory hating friends that everything would be better once they were gone and Labour were back in charge, are you seriously telling me that life isnt all better now !

The panic and nervousness in this thread confirms my suspicions - a lot of Hentai connoisseurs in our midst ;)

Seriously, though, the government overreach with this OSA nonsense is pathetic. God help Sir Keir Starmer when BF6 goes live ... his KD ratio is going to be seriously negative.

I've not been asked for it and I've gone on GTA store page, where exactly does this crop up? Or Is Xaldub on to something lol.

edit: gone on to various 18 games, RE, Silent Hill, and nothing..

I think its only for naughty bedtime games at the moment, I guess if it works well it may well then be rolled out to cover all 18 rated games/movies etc as a method to prove that the person playing/watching is 18 or over.

Oh, well that's something of nothing then lol. TBH, with the state of things, I don't have the will to get angry about having to do something I've done plenty of times before for other reasons.

Why wouldn't a debit card be accepted? I've never owned a credit card.

Debit cards can be given to 11+ year olds.

I have never had a credit card either. Never needed or wanted one. Looks like that might change, though. I think the key one for me is if they ever decided to include age verification in online shops for blade purchases. I buy a lot of tools online so may hit a problem with that. eBay already implemented that on their site, and I can't buy tools from them any more.

i just logged in to steam support to give them some logic as i received this right now ....

HENTAI
Under the UK Online Safety Act, Valve is required to verify that you are 18 or older before accessing mature sexual content. If you wish to do so, please add a valid UK credit card to your account and afterwards update the Mature Content Preferences.
Add a credit card to this account

so 20 odd years of debit card means nothing with the same payment details??????

No. Basically it needs to be approved by Ofcom.

I will literally pirate games before I give my personal details on this level, not that I have the time to play much these days. If I can't buy them legally I can't access them at all, period, and I will not adhere to the dystopian hellscape being forced upon the UK.

This is not helping kids, it's massive Government oversight that nobody sane asked for to solve a problem that didn't exist in the ways they claim. There are very, very blatant problems that this will not help whatsoever in terms of child safety that they turn a blind eye to and have for over literal decades. The same government that decided not to investigate grooming gangs and all sorts of other awful things while claiming it was to the benefit of the victims.

Incorrect on many levels!!

70% of UK adults approve of the change and, believe it or not, so do the kids.

I have to say that I don't like what the government have done at all, but I also have to acknowledge that parents have won the day here. This is a democracy and I have to concede that the majority of people want this, so end of discussion.

Thinking that not ever having had a credit card is some kind of flex shows a distinct lack of awareness lol. It doesn't mean you are spending money you don't have, yet people seems desperate to let everyone know about it.

So to those of you who have a credit card and have verified,

Can you then remove the payment method from your account afterwards and still view the blocked games? I never leave a payment method attached to my account.

I've been bypassing requirements and blocks since I was 12, so this is just another one to annoyingly find a way around. Maybe buy my games elsewhere and then add to Steam is the way.

This crap is brought through under the foolish guise of child protection, absolving parents of their responsibilities, and all it will do is funnel kids into parts of the net that legislation won't be able to reach where all sorts of dodgy stuff will be in operation. All the while the rest of society laps up this dystopian policing of the internet because they don't like boobies, blood or 'harmful*' stuff. We had something amazing and have destroyed it.

*anything can be harmful ffs, coddling can be viewed as harmful in my view, so ban the OSB as it brings people up to have no personal or parental responsibility.

No once the card is removed it asks for verification again :(

Anyone know how gifting works now, if you gift something adult to an unverified account can they claim it?

Can't you just use a VPN to log on to Steam and buy the game ? Once it's in your library, I imagine no further age verification is required.

edit. Is Valve determining who owns a "UK" account based on the IP address, account credentials, or both ?

How can you tell if you need it? Schedule 1 and GTA 5 were both listed as examples but I can load both of those pages just fine

While I haven't tested, I suspect it will work fine. Valve appear to just be blocking the community hub & store page, nothing else. If you already have a blocked game on your wishlist (or add it there, there are a few ways to directly add rather than through store page), you can go from wishlist to cart and checkout.

As far as I know there is also no mechanism on Steam (yet) to stop key redemption/gifting on specific accounts. Only flags for "redeems in X country" or not and gifting restrictions purely based on price (difference between regions too much). This really just seems like a last minute least effort thing. Credit card only, no other options at all and just blocking the store/hub.

Account credentials. Just a vpn hasn't been enough to switch regions on Steam for a while now, well before this nonsense started. To change regions on an existing account you would need to vpn and have payment from that region to switch to it iirc.

For now it's just literal porn games. Games that are just rated 18 are fine.
