We get a weekly test in Newton Aycliffe, 1045 every Thursday. ItsÁ due to the INEOS chemical plant in the industrial estate. Its more to warn workers and the housing estates in the immediate vicinity. I'm on the other side of town, in the event of an actual emergency its just a keep the windows shut kinda situation where I am.

Hopefully my phone gets this next one, didnt work for me last time!
Sod that, I can't think of a more terrifying sound.

I don't see why people have to be connected 24/7. I am sure as a wedding guest it would be polite to turn it off for a day and make conversation with fellow guests.

I agree, but I think most people will just naturally leave their phones switched on anyway. Actual emergencies and all that (no, not this alert).

In the days when people were not umbilically connected and actual emergencies happened as they often did, they were resolved or not. Whether this was a good or bad thing will always be debateable.

The other thing is whether emergencies are promoted beyond their actual importance by the inclusion of additional parties.

:)

Many people are literally addicted to their phones, or more precisely social media. They cant put their phones down for 5 minutes let alone an entire day.

I have no issues not using my phone in certain situations like that. But as for switching it off, that's not possible for me these days as I have a lot of smart devices that track my phone, like my eufy CCTV, my tado central heating, hue lights, etc. So if these lost communication with my phone, any automations I have set that are based on my location would be screwed.

As for this warning, I have these alerts turned off and have done so for a long time. Waste of time in this country; we don't get proper gigantic tornadoes, building-destroying earthquakes, 30+ft tsunamis, volcanoes, or fires that wipe out entire towns or cities. As for flooding, that doesn't happen very often and you can certainly see that coming, and even then it’s not the type to sweep towns away.

I'd have no issues with these alerts in certain countries where disasters can be a regular occurrence, but for the UK, it's pointless.

It's one of my biggest pet peeves of today. I have a couple family members that are precisely like this. I'd be having a conversation with them in-person, but during the conversation, they'd pick up their phone to reply to that text that's just come in or go on social media or whatever it is they do on there, and I'm still trying to talk to them while they're not even paying attention anymore. Basically talking to a brick wall at that point. It's just downright rude honestly.

It's quite funny that all the memorable bits of weddings you remember are the things that were bad.

That reminds me of an episode of mock the week scenes we'd like to see. Bad things to say at a wedding. Stewart Francis comes up to the mic. Places one hand over the other and says 'i do'

not sure if the wedding comments were ironic -
you know it's a genZ thing now to have no phone weddings (like attending a kate bush concert)

Antisocial media is the pariah of modern society. In fact it's not even society anymore.

Some of the gen z's at work look at me when my phone vibrates and say you've got a message. "I know, I'll look at it later I'm busy at the moment". Their faces are a picture!
