The worst thing about that strategy from McLaren was that they weren't even pressured into it, they could have just cruised to the same result on the Hards, but instead they actively chose to make things way more sweaty for themselves than things needed to be... all in the hope that Lando would somehow pull back a 18 second gap in 6 laps on the soft lololol.

But pitstops are part of the race - it was a slow stop, so why should Oscar pay the penalty for an error that was nothing to do with him

As a neutral keeps the championship going and fair end positions also Norris was playing the team game he was very compliant when asked to do it and he was faster throughout the race

I respect Oscar for playing the team game and think it ended in the just outcome and might result in a better overall outcome for Mclaren in the future.

I cant imagine Max or Lewis giving the position back - they would have said no.

Great drive from Max, faultless really, fully deserved win.

I completely disagree with what McLaren did. Are we going to give Lando a helping hand for every slice of bad luck he has now then? Not Piastri's fault. He should have refused. Towed Landon in quali as well. Priority is with Lando it seems.

But if you're playing the team game...

Swapping the drivers made absolutely no difference to the teams result. It made a difference to the drivers result.

Norris also played the team game he could have rejected it ?

If the priority was clearly Lando they would have insisted he pit first (as is the standard for the leading drive), not suggested to him that he should let Piastri pit first.

They cared more about Piastri losing 3rd place to Leclerc than the fact that even without a bungled stop Norris would have only been a second ahead of Piastri coming out the pits.

They should have just gone hards and got the same result minus the drama

Decent race overall. Exciting first section, action through the field, and a lot of tactical variety. Superb race for Max, just seemed head and shoulders above McLaren. Ferrari had decent pace but not enough to fight for a podium and Hamilton did good work to recover to 6th. Thought Kimi's penalty was a bit harsh and soured what was otherwise a solid recovery drive after a botched start. Bortoleto quietly delivering once again; despite Hülk's podium Gabi has been the clearly better driver -- impressive for a rookie to outclass such an experienced hand. Kudos to Hadjar too for sneaking into the tail end of the points. Dire for Yuki, started from 9th and only slid backwards in a car fast enough to comfortably win. Just dismal.

I expect most of the post-race discussions will be overshadowed by the Norris-Piastri switch but I have a lot of respect for Oscar giving it back with so little fuss. Especially after Norris handed him the lead under similar circumstances last year.

Because that's what the driving standards guidelines say - if the overtaking car has done enough to 'win' the corner, the responsibility is on the defending driver to make sure there's no collision

They say that the driver on the inside being overtaken needs to leave space for the other driver not that they need to jam the anchors so that the overtaking driver can sweep to the inside as if they aren't there. Just a terrible decision from the Stewards and yet another bit of shoddy driving from Sainz.

A mistake? The wheel gun didn't work. It happens.
The priority was the team getting 2/3 which they still had so didn't have to interfere with drivers champ.

I didn't really understand Mclarens strategy in the end, kind of seemed to fall between 2 stools. Either they needed to trust the softs were going to do 12-15 laps and go for it with a view to catching Max or just do the same as RB and put hards on. In the end they obviously didn't trust they'd last long so just lost a ton of time in the interim period then limped to the end.
