What film did you watch last night?

I’m not sure how many times I can watch one person getting separated from a group, looking round a room to suspenseful music and then a cheap jump scare. There’s a gazillion of them in this film. You could literally shuffle them like cards and it would make no difference to the story.
You'll love the series they're releasing soon then :P

The Banshees of Inisherin. 4/10

All of that score is because the island was beautifully shot and the acting wasn't to bad, but over all the story was as dull as dishwater.

Good to know. I’ve wanted to watch this a few times, just couldn’t bring myself to do it.

Yes I believe it is. I've seen worse sfx in more recent films.
Walt Conti, the guy that did the animatronics in the first film, is a legend in the movie scene, he also made Free Willy, and the sharks in Deep Blue Sea, which were awesome, there's only 1 CGI shark in DBS, the one that eats Sam Jackson, the rest were all robots.
I'm unsure if the same guy worked on Ananconda(s) but either way, it was pretty decent for it's time. The intro scene out on that river is savage, as is the bit when that person falls into the mating coil orgy of the Anaconda's!
I'm glad you liked it, it's one of those, take it for what it is, films. I watched the original not long ago, after DBS funnily enough.

If you've got a spare 8 minutes, this is a really good animatronics making of the sharks from DBS:

The royal hotel(netflix)
2 girls on a holiday trip in Australia need some more cash, so they go to work in a bar in an outback mining town, full of women starved men.
In some ways, it's like a crappy version of lord of the flies, but with an older cast.
I watched it, but it wasn't good. 4.5/10.

Sounds familiar.

Oh, ok, never mind.

Local Hero (1983)

Saw Jeremy Clarkson waxing lyrical about it on Twitter so I gave it a go. I was a bit disappointed honestly but it was decent enough. 6/10.

I had a similar experience with that film after hearing Mark Kermode bang on about it. I think maybe you had to be there.

Nobody 2 - pretty poor, hopefully they wont take it any further, you can just see it getting more cartoonish and over the top with each release now akin to John Wick. So fingers crossed they stop there. 4/10

Felt the same. But id say 6/10. Nonsensical brain off movie. Just didn't make much sense, the story seemed a bit ott.

watched Welcome to Sudden Death on netflix.
Michael Jai White starring in a low budget remake of Van Damme's Sudden Death.
It's decent enough for what it is but really needed the fight with the mascot :D
6\10

The Conjuring: Last Rites (at the cinema)

Likable paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren deal with yet more spooky things plaguing a(nother) helpless family.

Passable. The cast are all quite good but the material just isn't fresh enough to warrant revisiting the series unless you want 'more of the same'.

This time around there is a lot of emphasis on the relationships in the family and this takes up a pretty hefty amount of screentime, to the point where I felt like the film was quite slow at times.

When spooky things do happen, there is nothing exciting for those familiar with the territory. The ghost designs feel uninspired. The plot re-treads the usual things and nothing is unexpected. The foreshadowing felt very laboured and you could see all set-ups from a mile away.

Still, you can do a lot worse and if you only like to dabble in horror you might enjoy it. It's certainly a lot better than the last Insidious film... that was terrible.

5.5/10
