JDM Import guide/walk through

Just had the invoice in for the Lupo which seems to have landed.

VAT, Duty and all the jazz that goes with it is £1312

Of that, £330 is Duty, £760 is VAT. The remainder is the NOVA handling, customers clearance and terminal handling etc.

Duty is 10%, VAT is 20% of the total price after duty and other fees are added, they get you at all angles!

Interestingly my car was around 500,000yen ish and my agent has asked me to pay £114.59 in duty and £1820 in vat

Little surprised it that's much more although my maths might be off

I've been asked to pay the HMRC directly planning to that tonight.

Yeah, seems too high. Ask them for a breakdown, there is usually a calculation sheet that can be provided showing detail

You are right to question it as it's common for fees to be inflated

I did wonder that although they have given me the CDS reference so not sure how.

Sorry one more question. Was service fees included in for the vat and duty?

Edit, sorry, yes, I think service fees are part of the Vatable charges
Ah fair enough I haven't had time to calculate yours yet but did for mine and looks like someone added the invoice total to the fob

From the looks of it it's only the fob that should be taxed.

Did wonder when they tried to add 1.3% to 8k, I mean one million yen is around £5k and the invoice total was just over one million.

I suppose it's good though as this will make other users be aware to check custom agents paperwork as they aren't what you would think.

The duty rate is 10% of the vehicle value + freight.

The Vat is 20% of the vehicle value + the duty+ vat Adjustment

That's how it was for me with the Lupo

The Vat adjustment is Hmrc wizardry but usually trivial, I think it's an additional fee after it's here for their part of the import process

Sorry to make to make it confusing axeboy but I'm a little confused on the numbers.

Wasn't the cost of the car

300,00 yen (£1,501.76) today rate

And the shipping to be

159,363 yen (£797.75) today's rate

Then how would that work out to £330 in duty and in £760 in vat?

Would it be

£1501.76 + £797.75= £2,299.51

£2,299.51 x 10% = 229.951

So duty would be £229.95

Then VAT would be

£2529.46 x 20% = £505.89

So wouldn't the total be £735.84?

I might have calculated it incorrectly due to being sleep deprived but surely I missing somthing?

It calculates closer to the total invoice amount.

Hey mate, it's all good, that's why I'm doing this thread

The cost of the car is around 500000yen as it has to include all of the other fees in aid of buying it, so in this case, inland transport, auction house fees, agent fees, Jevic cert etc etc.

That gives you about 660000yen, 10% of that being about £330.

So it is essentially the invoice value inc shipping, duty applied then taxed then any other fees on top after that such as the VAT adjustment and the shipping agent/clearance fees etc.

Very interesting thread, always wanted a Jdm Ignis sport after owning one for a few years. Any Aristo Vertex about? or HT81s Ignis?

Went to see it today, quite pleased. Needs a clean but looks great.

MOT, service and underseal to come. A few cosmetics and a stereo

Sounded spot on, very impressed under the bonnet. Has rear fogs already, that's one thing off the todo list and the tyres are fine too.

Just some little bits of info on the Duty element. I got some new info from my shipping agent who Ive used loads and:

  • A few weeks ago HMRC started to kick off about lower rate duty on Japanese manufactured vehicles (1.3%)
  • After a couple of weeks of battles, its now been decided that the invoices for the japanese built vehicles have to show "WE CONFIRM THESE VEHICLES HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED IN JAPAN"
  • Some are able to get Certificates of Origin from Japan which also helps
  • Some agents wont know this and some agents will add 10% regardless for Duty
  • We also believe BIMTA are taking this on with HMRC

Always interesting to see whats doing in the background but useful to know
