Going straight to geared motorbike might be too much not like playing computer game making mistakes.
Everyone (well, nearly) here has gone through this process of not having ridden a bike before to holding an A licence. Yes, there's a lot to learn, but it isn't an overly arduous or lengthy process once you're in the swing of it and the muscle memory is engrained.

There are DAS crash courses for doing it in a week or two - doing it over months and months is going to make passing harder. You will learn bad habits.

I've a budget of around 8-9k for a bike, the current favourites are MT-09 SP and Tuono V4 1100, the MT-09 SP is in my view a safe, solid choice, right? The Tuono on the other hand is... Any other bikes to look at?

The 2021 MT-09 is well worth it over the earlier versions. The SP is well worth punting for, too. Cruise control cannot be overstated in use. The CP3 engine in the 2021 onwards is damn magical. I don't have any experience with a Tuono to comment there, unfortunately.

Tuono comes with eye watering service costs.
S1000R or CB1000 Hornet SP?

It's sooo ugly tho... I was thinking 2019-2020 or try and stretch to the later model.

S1000R?
How's the reliability and any particular years to look for/avoid?

Not only servicing costs, but accessibility and parts timescales too. I've heard of people losing their bikes for months because Aprilia didn't stock the parts (ignition barrel literally took four months as it needed coding to the ECU).

Reckon you'd get a decent gen 2 S1000R Sport for that money, maybe even a higher milage gen 3.

Suppose it depends on what you're after really - I've had a gen 2 S1000R Sport and now have the gen 3; can't fault either bike really, other than the *#£% throttle tube/housing, which on both of my bikes around the 10k miles mark, got really creaky/sticky to operate and the only fix seems to be replacing it for about 300 quid! Though I'm hoping my gen 3 can get it fixed under warranty.

If you fancy something fun - what about the older 939 Hypermotard/Hyperstrada, bags of fun, and with a pipe, they sound amazing

Everything else being equal, I've always stuck to the cheesy mantra of the bike choosing the rider. Build a hit-list of four or five bikes and go ride them all. One will put a bigger smile on your face than the others.

Well, kinda forgot about my bike (2010 Suzuki GSX650f) a bit. It's been sat in the garage for 2.5 years. Seized up a bit, will need calipers stripping, new chain and sproket set etc. Maybe a new battery, but has been sat plugged in on trickle.

I cba and want rid, is eBay the best bet for a £750 buy it now "Engine runs but it's your problem" sort of sell?

Does anyone have any contacts in Nottingham to get any leads (FB groups perhaps?) I feel absolutely gutted for Yogesh. To come all the way from India on his bike only to get stolen in UK.

I will post this on Reddit UK to get more reach as well.
