Meta Quest 4 (2026)

The closest is the Big Screen Beyond 2, but that's wired and requires Index base stations and controllers.

Wired is fine, base stations and controllers absolutely not :)

It's fine, it will do for now, as said I use it so infrequently I'd be silly to get anything more 'premium'. I'm also yet to be convinced on the long term viability of the tech anyway, I'm seeing the same 'killer apps' I saw years ago lol.

I have a Q3 and a Play For Dream MR and although the PFD is nice in several area's it still isn't worth £1000 over a Quest 3, and the Q3 still has it beat in several area's. Unless itching just to try something else I'd recommended sticking with a Quest 3 and see what comes up in the not too distant future :)

To be honest I prefer my Quest Pro over the Q3 for PCVR. I've not been playing for a while, due to a faulty controller, but now I've got that sorted I went back into modded Skyrim VR and was totally blown away again by how sharp and clear it looks.

Yeh I can imagine, if the Pro had higher res panels (nothing silly, 2.5k resolution would be fine imo) and passthrough like a Q3 has it would have been amazing. I've learnt with my PFD that panel resolution and OLED isn't everything, and imo the quality of the lenses are the number one aspect in the experience.

iirc the Pro was due to come out over 12 months before it did but it was kneecapped by covid and the chip shortage.
it was also meant to have the augmented reality of the Q3 but the chip was not up to it and it had some last min revisions to remove some components - again due to chip shortage.

IF it had come out when it was meant to and not had the chip shortage compromises, it would have been a product alongside the quest 2 and as such would have looked amazing.
As it was it almost came out with the quest 3, (right at the end of the quest 2) and ends up looking high end in some areas but very lacking in others.

damn shame really, doubly so because they are not making a Quest 3 pro.

ideally the "pro" line should come out 1st with any new processors etc, then the cheaper consumer version maybe 12 months later with the exact same compatibility as the pro hardware but cheaper due to it being now older hardware, and cut back on things like the headmount and other compromises (but not a feature set reduction)

and then finally maybe another 12 months in release the budget model - again same feature set but maybe cheaper lenses, less storage or what ever and what now will be a v mainstream compute unit.

before waiting another 12 months before rinse and repeat.

i know its easy to play armchair VR tycoon but imo they should have shelved the entire cpu/gpu part of the quest pro even if it meant delaying longer and bought it out with the quest 3 guts in it.

imho the Pro line just needs to focus on quality and 'what ever it takes to achieve it'. I get it that for mass market standalone makes sense but you cannot escape the fundamentals of needing HQ displays with serious GPU grunt to drive them if you want better images no matter how good the lenses are or how hard ThrillSeeker & Matteo want to avoid it by talking about their abstract 'experiences' and how x or y doesn't matter to them.

I'd love to have a Quest Pro with higher resolution QLED panels, and Q3 (or better) innards. Everything else hardware wise is very good, and the form factor (with the Globular Cluster kit) is very comfortable. The controllers are great, except for Meta breaking them with updates.
In fact it's the Meta software side of the Pro that's been the worst part of the experience with firmware updates frequently breaking the headset and controllers.

I would hope that would improve for newer headsets, but that's a forlorn hope.

That video shows what's possible right now and will come to headsets in the future, great video. So excited for the future of VR and MR.

I skipped Quest 3 entirely because I didn't want to pay for another set of prescription lenses again, these things adds like £100 for me.

i know it depends on your prescription but i think i got my quest pro lenses for ... i want to say around £10 but not certain from aliexpress. Whilst they may not be brilliant they are fine for in a sweaty VR headset

I don't think you really need specific lenses for astigmatism for VR, just your distance prescription. I have an astigmatism and it's not something I've personally ever had to worry about with VR lenses.

It really does matter, but it depends on how bad your astigmatism is. Mine's pretty bad so I have to have specific lenses.
