GPU - Cable and PSU Compatibility

I’ve just brought a used GPU ASUs GTX 1080 and it’s got 2 connection ports on the side 8 pin and 6 pin, my PSU only has 1 PCIE 8 pin port, any advise on which cable I need or if the PSU is compatible would be great.

Does your PSU only have 1 connector on the cable, or 2 connectors on the cable?

If it has 2 connectors, you can still use it. There is usually a split where you can "snap off" or slide off 2 pins from the 8, to make 6.

And it wouldn’t matter that there’s only a 8 pin in the PSU but 14 in theGPY?

You have one PCIE cable, right? Does it have 2x 8-pin connectors on the device-end, or just 1x 8-pin connector?


I'm not aware of any Corsair PSU with this model number, do you mean CX750M?

Sorry yes CX750, so PSU side it has 8 pin GPU side it has 2 4+2 connectors
 
It’s entirely possible that I may have discarded that cable when I originally did the build can you point me in the direction of a replacement

Sorry yes 8 pin in the PSU and then the other end is 2 x 6+2 connections. Give the GPU is 8 pin and 6 pin will it matter there’s only 8 pin on the PSU

This is all you need just use 8 pin and the 6pin leaving aside the extra 2pins if they don't detach it should still fit leaving 2 pins unconnected..

So I don’t need more than the 4+4 in the PSU despite there being 4+4 and 3+3 in the GPU?
 
Forget the gpu end of the cable it's the end that plugs into the gpu that's important and you have a pair of 6+2 pin connectors. Put one of the 6+2 pin connectors in the 8 pin socket on the gpu and just the 6 pin in the 6 pin socket on the gpu leaving the extra two pins dangling. Using only a single cable with it's daisy chained connectors isn't ideal but it should work fine.

We have had a few posts similar to this over the past couple of weeks, mainly about motherboard connectors. People need to realise that the manufacturers wouldn't have made the psu end of modular cables the way they have if they didn't work and that side of the cable is largely irrelevant to the end user as long as they plug it into the correct sockets on the psu, it's the components side of the cables that matters most to us.
