Spec me a rice cooker

My partner made me do a blind taste test on washed and unwashed rice. Annoyingly I could tell the difference straight away much to the amusement of my partner.

Was there much in it?

I must admit I stopped bothering as I could never really tell any different.

But must admit I've not tried a taste test like that, I might give it a go.

Got a bit fed up of the browning in my simple plate so I've bought a Panda. Holds just enough for me + my partner plus leftover for next day. Also bought some brown basmati to use with it, never had brown rice so we'll see.

It stuck together less and the texture and appearance was far better. I think it’s to do with the starch, happy to be corrected on that though.

Cooked the 1/2 cup to throw before first use as they suggest. Jasmine, washed it thrice, it was awful? Clumpy, burnt and browned when opened with only 2 minutes on the "keep warm" timer. The bowls a bit awkward to remove too because it's set so deep with only a small lip, and you can hear it scratch on the shell which is concerning.

It'll be going back. What alternatives are there given Zojirushi, Tiger and Cuckoo don't seem to support type G plugs without paying absurd import fees for a Singapore/HK one.

What are G plugs? Taitung rice cooker, I keep banging the drum. It looks basic but it’s faultless for me and my partner.

Type G plugs are what we use in the UK, our 3 pin plugs.

Quick look at Taitung shows them to be "dumb" rice cookers at a premium price, I'm hoping to get something that self-controls a little better else I'd just keep my 20 quid cheapo one :D

I’d do some more research on Taitung rice cookers they’ve been powering Taiwans rice cooking for decades :p If I can cook great rice on it anyone can.

Walk round your local uni and see what every Asian student is using in their dorms. It isn’t the Japanese brands

Turns out it's a bit of user issue but not really. I did the throwaway 1/2 cup exactly as stated by the handbook, which looks to intentionally use less water hence the burning and browning. Cooked 1.5 cups of basmati last night with a more standard amount of water and it turned out fine - there was no browning and the texture was consistent throughout even after 1 hour on keep warm (my old rice cooker would burn the bottom within minutes of standing with no water).

Still not happy with the pot spinning and scratching when serving, but I'll just deal with it rather than the hassle of returning and finding a new one.
