It's the way the World is heading, to be frank there are numerous other countries who have digital IDs (Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands and India to name a few) I don't see too much of an issue here.
My partner is Polish and she has had an ID card for more than a decade, she can use this to travel with and not need to carry her passport, EU countries only.
It'll cost money and take time to implement but ultimately it'll benefit various government agencies and may help to reduce crime, benefit fraud, work fraud, etc....
Hey, some of us want the government to stops the boats, stop illegal working, stop benefit fraud, I guess we'll get all of this soon, embrace the digital ID card to stop the boats.
