Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [27th - 29th September 2025]

Getting bit sick of the premiership tbh - watching Arsenal and Newcastle players constantly throwing themselves to the ground to try to win free kicks rather than attempting to win the ball is a bit sick making - seems to be getting worse this season.
should like Newcastle's new 35 23yr old striker then!

I mean he did tell the referee several times. They should be giving a retrospective ban, they won't like
Player tells ref, ref tells VAR, they do a check, everyone profits, no?

Or give the managers "reviews" like they do in other sports?

And this will always be the case until officials make their decisions based on what the defender does rather than the reaction of the attacker. Had Woltemade thrown himself to the ground then Gabriel's sent off.
Exactly. Which is also why diving (or at least going over very easily) is endemic.

There is close to zero punishment for diving and embellishment (outside of zero contact which is obvious and even then it has to be caught at the time) and there is so so so much to be gained by faking and cheating. Would love to see VAR get in the refs ear and say "player was caught lightly on neck and is holding their face, clear cheating, reverse yellow and book for simulation".

While I agree, that can only come if refs also start giving fouls even when players stay on their feet. If Woltemade had gone down the other day, Gabriel would probably have been sent off. That should not be the deciding factor in whether something is given as a foul or further punishment. As long as things like that aren't given, players will continue to go down, and understandably so.

If you punish them for going down, and fail to award free kicks when they don't, what on earth are they meant to do?

Oh I agree. We get the game that refs allow. I personally blame it on those bloody Europeans! Joking aside, I fully believe that around the days of United doing semi-well in the CL the PL and FA realised that English teams were at a massive disadvantage in Europe because they didn't indulge in the same play-acting and the more "robust" style of the PL was not compatible with the European style.

If there is one thing I cannot stand it is watching one team play a certain way and watching the opposition flip flop between the two and get rewarded on both sides. You can have it one way or the other. When you watch a team flop to the ground at the slightest contact whilst simultaneously putting in robust challenges and scrapping when it suits them and getting the rub both ways its infuriating. Thats how it used to be in Europe. English team get penalised for everything when the Spanish sides dive at every change. Spanish team get away with being dirty because the English team didn't flop all over the place.
