Bit of curious fun.... Be honest :p

Tis the black blud of forests ancient supped up by pipe from the bowels of the earth.

I don't want to disappoint @Efour so here is the true version.

Dinosaurs are rounded up from the inner/under world and forced into industrial juicing machines to be be squashed, like ribena berries. The juice is then pumped up to the overworld to be separated in giant centrifuge, then sold at barely above cost to us, the grateful customers, for it is hard and dangerous work done for benefit of us all

Gold star :p

There is the science bit - or what I can remember from my studies - involving organic residue (phytoplankton springs to mind) and many years of heat, compression and bacterial decomp = source rock.

Commerical produciton = culmination of old/poor seismic data + worse core samples, fastracked interpretation and model building/refinement followed by successive business cases around aggrssive drilling schedules and high rig rates.

Or, you simply poke a few holes in the ground to be met with gushing steams of hydroca... black gold :D

From what and how is oil formed and how is it commercially produced/extracted?
people spear whales and then boil the fat so get oil or some such.
you can also get it from crushing oil rich seeds like sunflower oil
don't even ask where baby oil comes from.

if you meant crude oil then you shoulda been more specific

Something I occasionally wonder about the process of fractional distillation.

Vaguely remembered lessons on the use of crude oil suggest to me that if you're creating anything out of oil, then even if you don't want them, things like petrol and diesel fuel will be a side product anyway. As you refine the oil, you end up with a set of different products, in largely predefined proportions.

So what happens when our proportional use of different fractional elements of oil change? Say we completely stopped using petrol, but still needed plastics, so were still refining crude oil?

No doubt the answer to this question is - it doesn't really work like that, it was a simplified description to allow school children to understand it. But hey.

We are scrapping all our refinery capacity and buying refined products from other countries at great amounts of carbon released into the atmosphere as decreed by the great god millipede.

I've read that three times, and I can't work out how it's relevant to my question, sorry.

What difference does where the refining is done make to a question about how the process works and whether it can be adapted?

Baby oil is made from babies compressed at 1,000,000 atmospheres. Perverts then smother themselves in it whilst making babies to feed the supply chain of Big Baby Oil, and the sick cycle continues perpetually.

The OP’s question doesn’t match the thread title.. I thought this was going in a whole other direction.. especially with the : p

Not read the rest of the thread, so:

Crude oil is formed from decaying organic matter and is locked under the surface of the earth and is extracted via large drills where it is then pumped to a refinery. The refineries then process the crude oil to make the required products - petrol, bunker oil and various products inbetween.

Will now read the rest of the thread

Its the after effects of all the adults who have gone out to have a vindaloo and had to let it all out

They have tapped in to the end wasteland and drilled it out

God gave us oil to test us....

Serious answer, only a vague understanding that it has to do with organic material that has decomposed over a very long period of time..
