*** ROG XBOX Ally X Discussion Thread ***

There's always a new APU around the corner though isn't there? If you used that argument you'd never update.
I more meant that it's not some game changer for anyone already in the space to upgrade from. If you're new to the format then it's a decent package.

It's not like RDNA4 is that new either so probably not a long way off. FSR4 feels like a really useful tool to manage power and performance of a handheld (can't recall whether it's meant to come to RDNA3). Guess we'll see once proper benchmarks are out.

There is talk of the NPU being used for AI upscaling when the handheld is connected to a higher resolution display, but I don't think anything has been showcased yet with this Z2 Extreme.

I think the market says otherwise.

The Steam Deck is starting to show it's age now and not everyone wants to pee around with trying to install Windows on the Steam Deck.

It may not be Switch 2 sales but it's enough to sell out in many places.

Selling out doesn't really mean much. They might have only made 10,000 units. Maybe only 1000 for all we know.

I can't imagine the market for $1000 handhelds is very big especially when you have the Switch 2 at less than half that price.

FSR4 can be modded on to the Steam Deck RDNA3. The YT channel Deck Wizard has several side by side comparisons in recent games. By the looks of it it is gives significant graphical quality increased over FRS3 at the expense of some performance loss.

It’s definitely closer to DLSS and uses similar tech, which is good. I did hear about it being modded onto the SD just wasn’t sure of the performance overhead.

Whilst I agree with the first point, I think the comparison to the switch 2 is flawed. The switch 2 is a console that only plays Switch games. This is a handheld PC that can play a lot more.

The Steam Deck also does mostly the same as the new "Xbox" handhelds at half the price and is made by Valve. Even then it is a relatively niche device. I can't see these more expensive "Xbox" handhelds selling more than the Steam deck.

I've got a Steam Deck and I've loved it. But I've jumped on the Xbox Ally X pre-order because I'm able to play my Gamepass on it. There is a significant jump in performance ability too I believe between the two devices. I'm hoping it'll feel better ergonomically too.

You maybe want to check out the Deck Wizard channel, he doesn't just do the Deck, he often does comparisons of the various current handhelds including the Switch 2, he'll no doubt wangle an XBox Ally X as well. He also shows the effects of using Lossless Scaling on top of FSR3/4 in various new games, he seems pretty dedicated trying things out.

These will fill in the gap as the Xbox branding helps and the ease with GamePass.

Everyone is waiting for a Steam Deck successor and Valve said its not happening anytime soon.

Price tag is high but at the end of the day this is the new normal. All the current generation consoles have gone up in price, not down. Which has never happened in gaming history but here we are.

Next Steam handheld won't be cheap either. All gaming hardware has become more expensive just like flagship mobiles.
