Brand new build, only alive for 5 hours before the PSU decided to blow itself up. Melted pin on the plug in the surge protector and a melted pin on the PSU itself.
Any ideas what could have caused this or is it just a duff unit? Worried its fried all my new components, got a new PSU on its way today to test so fingers crossed.
Corsair warranty process any good?

Sorry to hear that this has happened to you!

FWIW, I had to RMA a Corsair SF750 2 weeks ago! It was only 16 months old - not what I expected from a Platinum rated top tier PSU!

The RMA was horrendus, they did everything possible to avoid giving me the option to choose an alternative brand - I bought it from the Bolton competitor, who claims "we basically ARE Corsair UK, any time you return an item, it comes back to us anyway, whether you buy it direct from them or from us..." Anyway, after half an hour of being polite I lost my rag and ended up getting what I wanted.
It turns out Corsair were well aware of said fault 5 years ago, to the point that they even acknowledged it on their own website - yet 5 years later it's still happening to brand new ones!

I had always heard versus mixed opinions on Corsair PSU's, many failures too, but decided to try one for myself. Never again. Think what could have happened, I'm lucky my components are fine!

Also the Corsair despite being a top tier product and Platinum rated only had a 7 year warranty? WTF? When most Gold's have 10? Pretty tight I thought - I certainly would never risk a 7 year warranty PSU again, not after 16 months of one failing!

I'd strongly advise not getting another Corsair, I wasn't best pleased with mine, but 5 hours is a joke! If it's already failed you this quickly, then that isn't on! It could have damaged your components, so don't take the risk again!

I went for an NZXT C1200 ATX3.1 instead, fully modular, fanless mode button, smart looking, silent, 10 year warranty 80+ Gold, it's only £159.99 and often on sale - it is proven to be a solid silent PSU and reviews extremely well! Other users on here also own them and rate them :) Have a look, you might like it ;)

@Tetras another Corsair ***** the bed. It was only last night I red of another too! This is getting a bit silly now. I definitely stand by my point of never buying their PSU's again!

I ordered a Lian Li, coincidently I nearly ordered the NZXT. Last two builds I have used BeQuiet PSUs and never had a problem, I wont be using Corsair again! Spoke to returns yesterday, they said because I'm still within 30 day window of purchase they will just refund me when I send the unit back, but they advised me to check if its damaged any of my other components first.

Ah fair enough dude, fingers crossed for you that works out better!
Yeah the NZXT is amazing, 10 year warranty, fully modular, silent, fanless zero rpm mode switch and looks the part too, and it's still only 150x160MM!

Nice, I do like BeQuiet :)
Good man! It's not worth the risk, and there are many people that have had them fail. It was one of those times where I showed brand loyalty, when I should have just listened to the failures!

Was the return via the Bolton competitor by any chance?
That's all very well, but you can only go by smell and what you can see. The bad thing is now you have to risk plugging a new PSU in, and then messing around testing it for days to make sure everything is still stable! They don't care about that worry and time wasted though

Well they seemed to suggest Corsair would cover the cost of the fried components if they are dead, but I don't hold up much hope for that based on what your experience was like! Thankfully I hadn't stripped my old PC down yet so at least I still have a working machine in the meantime. New PSU should be with me sometime this afternoon (via the Rainforest this time!)

Haha, you must have spoken to a different person to me, there's a few there, one of which is very passive agressive and loves to talk over you, and the other thinks he knows everything because he's got a 4090
Oh they also told me, that they couldn't warranty my RAM that I'd bought second hand, because I didn't have a receipt - despite it being lifetime warranty (claimed) and me having the original box and all the serial numbers intact on the ram and packaging...

Ah that's great news mate! Luckily you wont need to test that theory of them paying out for other components then! :)
Fingers crossed everything is all good, I'd leave it on doing some stress tests, and then do an overnight Memtest+ USB bootable test. Then by Sunday, you know it's bulletproof :D

Thanks for the warnings!

Up until recently I actually still had Corsair's entrance to the PSU market - the original Seasonic-made CX400 - as a spare.

Since then they have mostly concentrated on cheaper (for them!). While bean counters are everywhere, I though that Corsair employing people like JohnnyGuru was so that they could supplement the bean counting with technical knowledge about reasonable components. In other words, cut corners but in a knowledgeable way.

Since RM and HC are not cheap lines, I am disappointed that the recent updates seem to have worse quality.

I've had 40% failure rate on Corsair PSU's, last one I bought is in my Nephews rig, a 2018 RM750. When I wanted a higher wattage PSU when I eventually decide to put AM5 in my backup rig, I bought this.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £113.99 (includes delivery: £3.99)

Pure power 12M is the same price, dunno what the difference is. The 13 is very quiet and up there with the Seasonics I've owned over the years for fan noise.

If a new PSU blows other components are you up the creek when it comes to getting money for other components?
According the competitor in Bolton that claims to be Corsair UK - I wouldn't have any faith that they'd fully honour it. It was an absolute nightmare to get them to honour the warranty/alternative choice replacement of my recent ****** SF750!

You can imagine how angry I was when the 'holy grail of SFX PSU' as it was wrongly crowned, the SF750 Platinum, failed barely under load doing web browsing/streaming and light gaming, in 16 months or less... That is not what you expect from the top tier product of that category that they offer!
The RMA/warranty was the final nail in the coffin. I doubt that I'll buy anything from them again, as it's all well and good, whilst it's working... But I don't like the worry of 'what if it breaks' now :(

I bought some from them once, arrived faulty, they refused to do refund/replace.

They refused to honour my secondhand ram, despite me having the entire packaging/box with all serials numbers present on both packaging and the ram itself - apparently I need a receipt from the original buyer. **** off? The unique serial number matches the boxes? What if I'd thrown that away or the previous owner had? So much for 'lifetime warranty'...
Anyone else, i.e. Logitech, would have just sent me a replacement, no questions asked - and I know that from previous experience!

The cocky ***** stated that "even if you buy it from Corsair directly, it still comes to or from us!" - that's a nice unsettling thought huh, imagine if you were buying 'direct' and for example had, had a bad experience with the Bolton competitor in the past, thus were steering well clear of them, then you find out it's all being handled by them... Not good!

Yeah I can vouch for Logitech customer service, they sent out new mouse and steering wheel under warranty. Fantastic service.
Not just place in Bolton there's another place, four letters not sure if they still exist they sent the wrong item and they refused to take it back.

Yep, Logitech are awesome!
I thought the place in Bolton was the 4 letter place? As that's what I've been talking about the whole time if so, my mistake if they're not in Bolton and I got it wrong FML

Edit: the 4 letter place is in Bolton? So is there another company from there too? One with the word Buy, in, maybe?

Yes the place in bolton, a similar word of available in tins of meat product, usually fried on toast in breakfast. Similar word in a word that is used between two locations across a bridge.

Another four letter place, with two first letters of the alphabet.

:D

My mind literally just had a BSOD!

So it is the place I mentioned, the one that sounds like the canned food?
And are you also saying the second place is also from Bolton - the one with the 2 first letters of the alphabet ;)

Corsair changed the OEM for a number of their PSU ranges around a year back, unfortunately quality took a dip while doing so as backed up by shortened warranties for the likes of the RME lineup.

The only Corsair PSU's I'd consider buying at the moment are the SHIFT and and RMX lines, and even then there's often better options in the price range.

That said, I'd be surprised if anything died in your PC due to the failure as they do have robust protections in place despite the more questionable longevity and power delivery.

This is worth a gander when looking to purchase as a general guide:
