Chinese cars

I've had the Jaecoo about a month now, not a car i'd buy myself - work took my van and gave me the Jaecoo and allowed me to use it privately too for a really low price.. it's not bad, drives ok, bags and bags of tech, does about 50 odd miles on a full charge but the petrol engine is a bit thirsty but then I suppose it is about 2.2 tonne so to be expected I suppose. Overall I'd probably give it a 6/10.

Interesting, i've been looking at the Jaecoo J7 recently as it's pretty well priced and what i currently pay in petrol isn't far off the monthly costs.
 
Not really, still far less hasstle to own one. Much cheaper to run an old diesel/petrol long term when you consider the very high price and depreciation of EVs.
I wonder if you believe what you post or if you just do it to try to get a rise out of people.

granted if you have an old 20 year old banger and compare it running cost wise Inc depreciation to a new EV then you may be right

but a like for like vehicle so long as you can charge at home it is just wrong on so many levels

To be fair he was replying to a post that said "All petrol and diesel cars are obsolete" so if anyone was trying to get a rise out of people you probably need to look one post further up.

Running only a 5-10 year old petrol or diesel is still going to be cheaper in the long term. Plus you'll still actually be able to sell it when it's over 8 years old...

Obviously if you just go and lease something new and spend a large chunk of your wages on anything, you aren't very smart with money.

An EV if you aren't paying for it yourself, great. But waste your own money on this tat? No. Buy something cheap for commuting and pile the rest in to savings/investments. Times have changed and if you don't keep up you'll be a poor pensioner.

So in essence it's a new car versus old car argument, if so the fuel source is irrelevant.

I agree on the financial side of things, I love cars, I also think they are a massive waste of money.

Not everyone is the same though and that's a great thing for the economy.

Just to add "buy something cheap for commuting" has used EV written all over it. Run it until it is cream crackered and you'll be able to buy it's replacement on fuel savings alone. Obviously the usual 'if you can charge at home' caveats apply.

You know you can buy 5-10 year old EVs right?

Not all of them are 100 mile Leafs, very capable cars like the Model 3 now fall into this category given it launched in 2019. Don’t fancy a Tesla? Merc EQC, Audi Etron, Kona, Nero etc are all launched 6 years ago.

Knock it back to 5 years old and you can jump into a Tycan for a surprisingly little amount of money given how much they cost as new. Of course more down to earth cars are also available like the ID.3 and Polestar 2.

No one wants a 10 year old EV because no one wants the risk of the battery needing replacing. Which is why they sit for months, maybe a year+ un-sold. While the dealers refuse to lower prices to where they probably should be, sub 5k.

I reckon these will be worth some serious coin one day. Sooner or later someone's gonna pop up with third party battery tech and motors and stuff, and cars which were once premium but suffered massive depreciation due to the warranty and servicing concerns will be worth a ton again.

It's not always the cost of the items though, it's the labour. Some of these EVs need almost completely disassembling to reach the batteries and there are no standardised parts or repairs. The parts+labour can run in to 5 figures on some. So it means they'll be scrapped if they fail.

Another issue is some of the modern battery packs auto brick themselves if they are in a crash (for "safety" reasons because they are structural, which is a bit scary on it's own!). So you can't even salvage them.

Standardisation should have been set early on and costs would have been sensible. Because they didn't old ones are a bit doomed.

Ironically no one wants a 10 year old ICE car because of the risk of failure either. People generally drive them out of necessity, not because they actively choose to.

Likewise they also don’t want the expensive service items that come with maintaining an engine of that age to keep it on the road (expensive timing belts etc).

But as ever you love to post nonsense that fits your alternative reality.

I probably would t go that far, they made an absolute shed load of these and they aren’t going to end up like the original Tesla Roaster or BMW i8 which were very limited.

Increasingly the same is true of a lot of ICE unfortunately - several recent vehicles you need to take the engine out to do what should be small easily accessible fixes which is insane and IMO the manufacturers should be taken to book for it. Increasingly things like wing mirrors and headlight assemblies, etc. you can't do many simple fixes on, either due to construction or the manufacturer not making OE parts available to the public to purchase, and need to replace the entire unit at costs in the thousands.
 
China - yes Eletre, could be a classic great looking, local has a green one I see every Sunday
IF the Chinese alliances ensure products will have long term parts at a reasonable price, versus rapid generational/design churn of their other ev's, so built in redundancy(&depreciation)

Otherwise easy to pick I3 as the future design classic, that people are already updating batteries in ; whereas taycan's classic market segmernt it's neither a sportscar nor GT, and surpassed by PPE platform.


[can't do simple fixes : for renault 5 ev repair, it's headlights anyway from valeo are at least modular, which helps insurance costs ]

Also how to lose credibility stating PPE supersedes J1.2 Taycan. It doesn’t, its main benefit is material cost to VAG. All other attributes are worse, the q6 is particularly disappointing. But then you haven’t been in any so the ideal you had credibility to degrade is probably a stretch.
