Tending to be right.
The ultimate take down on protein bars and ultra processed food. Joe Wicks goes scientific and markets the last word in Killer protein, likely to give you diarrhea, probably carcinogenic, may give you a stroke and it is all totally legal to sell without any checks

Will get this on my watch list. I’ve just found a flavour of protein powder that I actually like too :( Only have it on workout days as I find it helps my recovery.

UPF is a tricky one as it requires an awful lot of thought to cut it out entirely.

Its about protein bars mate, not powders. The bars have a lot of junk in them like maltitol which is a sweetening agent and not a very good one for us.

James Smith (love him or hate him) has posted a good response video about this. Basically old Joe needs some PR so is making some pretty funky claims completely lacking in any studies to back up what he's saying and C4 love a good "we're all going to die!" "documentary".

I wouldn't go making them the cornerstone of your diet, much like anything else but there's absolutely nothing wrong with them as part of a diet. There's much much worse things you could be eating.

If his crusade is about UPF in general then he's picked the wrong thing to demonise as they're generally eaten by people who either have a pretty tidy diet otherwise or are slowly moving towards a heathier diet/lifestyle and are trying to make slightly better choices than a 4 pack of snickers.

If a protein bar is that bad then what's is Greggs...

I guess the point is not to be fooled by protein bars but surely anyone with eyes can read the ingredients?

Greggs is fatty pork with a few additives wrapped in pastry. Standard sausage roll.
I think that the point Joe Wicks was making is that his bar like many is a dozen or so white powders mixed into a paste covered in chocolate and orange sprinkles. Not going to kill you or not right away. It is factory produced food and very little if at all looks like food at any point. You are not going to glean much from the list of ingredients.

Fatty pork is not healthy, especially when eaten in large amounts, as it is currently. It's not like it's decent cuts of pork either. High in calories too. And salt...

I don't see sausage rolls growing on trees either.

I thought this was about the independent study Huel did showing a month on Huel showed increase in significant health markers. Can't find the link atm.

Old Wicks seems to be going down hypocrite alley......didn't he have a deal with MyProtein or one of them, with a range of products like this?

I agree totally I don't eat sausage rolls.

Whataboutism is rife though.

I'm sure the video is over hyped click baity ******** to make money.

But goes without saying eating anything like a protein bar or anything regularly like that under any belief that it is remotely healthy is madness.

Whilst it is good to highlight that not all health foods are healthy. Wicks is probably doing it to grab headlines for people like the OP to get outaged.

Me outaged? No I never was.;)

I assume that you are a fan of such products so I will leave that there.

I'm not a huge fan no, it was more an observation... I mean you started this thread after all.

I was more amused by the missing r in outraged almost like being outed.

However I thought Mr Wicks made some excellent points even if a little clickbaity. Soylent Green here we come.

Totally agree with the fast food comment. It’s astonishing how much high calorie fast food is easily available. It’s no wonder the world is obese.

Ingredients is another challenging argument. Anyone can read the ingredients, most including me won’t know what they are, more won’t know what’s good and what’s not. A lot of people don’t even bother I should imagine!

Agree that as a "supplement" they can be good. Meal replacement isn't perfect, but your comment about demonising health foods and supplements which are usually consumed by people trying to get healthier is absolutely spot on. Not many Greggs sausage roll eaters are nailing 5 protein bars a day... or maybe they are?

Don't worry though, instead of fixing the route cause, you can pay a fortune to take drugs to 'loose weight'. What a world we live in!

As a population level intervention we need to embrace weight loss drugs. The NHS indications for prescription are quite tight at the moment, but I imagine they'll get a lot less stringent quite rapidly.

Ah, I didn't see that, I was too busy being outraged by your outagedness
