60 Year Old Gamer looking for advise on new Base Unit

Hi All, been gaming since the 80's ( Vic 20 was my first one lol ) ...looking to upgrade my 6 year old base unit , saw this , wondering what your thoughts are and what improvements i can tweak , flexible on price but has to be off the shelf or custom build by a Pc specialist .... mostly used for gaming ..currently playing Elden Ring

It'll do the job but:
- That's a premium case (i.e. not cheap).
- The CPU may or may not be good for the longer-term (Intel says their last microcode updates are final/problem is fixed, but who knows).
- A 'budget' SSD with variable parts and not great rated endurance.
- The graphics card may be impacted by the limited VRAM in the future, similar to how the 3070 is by 8GB now.

If I was going Intel, I'd get a 265K instead. If I was going AMD, ideally a 7800X3D or 9800X3D.

I'd dust the vic20 off, great machines, do love myself a bit of blitz

As above, from recent experience I'm sticking clear of Intel, they're on the up again but have had a patchy couple of years.

Dare say the folk on here in would spec you something to have built of you let them know what you're playing etc.

As mentioned, we need a budget and use scenario to be of more help, I would certainly not be buying that PC based on the CPU, recent Bios fixes have meant to have addressed this but even a quick Google on "Intel Core i7 14700KF degradation" shows it can still have issues. It's worth you yourself having a Google and coffee to read up on all that.
Pretty much any PC these days needs BIOS updates, so you will need to be comfortable with that or have somewhere to do it for you. Pretty much any pre-built has compromises.

Currently the go to has been AMD this year, for CPU and GPU.
And nothing wrong with a fancy case, I am planning on something nice myself this year, just can't make my mind up and have 5.25 bay desire.

Based on the spec you have, a custom built PC would be far better value, but again you may well be over specifying the build, 64gb of memory is a hell of a lot. How many cores do you think you need? What other uses does the PC do on a daily basis? I'm sure Overclockers UK and most of the forum members would be very helpful.

I would list a budget, your current PC specification, your monitor resolution, do you want RGB fans and memory? As gaming seems to be your priority below is a more capable system based on the spec you listed. Bear in mind 32gb of memory, can be changed to RGB or 64gb. A little more money and slightly higher spec would be a 9800X3D and MSI B850 Tomahawk, though depending on resolution and game choices, you may be paying a premium on a CPU that offers little in performance over a 7800X3D or 9700x.

If you are using 64gb of memory and need a lot of cores, the 9900x is a viable option too.

Bear in mind, if your needs are not that demanding, and you mainly play older titles, you may well find a 6 core 7600x with 32gb of memory and even a 9060 XT 16gb may be all you need. Will till look great in that case. And yes, I am the sort that would quite happily build the PC based on what I actually need currently and upgrade if it's apparent.

And with all that in mind, you can also see Overclockers have complete PC systems including gaming, just not very many exciting cases.

No. Avoid the Intel 13000 and 14000 series CPUs as they have well-known problems with degredation.

Given your likely budget, look at the Ryzen 9800X3D and you won't need a big expensive AIO - a Peerless Assassin tower cooler will suffice. 64 GB is overkill, but if you're going to buy it, now is the time to do so.

Wow , thanks for all your replies , my budget is around £2000 but flexible , just looking for a more than half decent PC base unit , mostly for gaming , my current system is about 6 years old , it just about plays Elden Ring ok ,with the occasional crash but the system is soooo slow , just wanting something that i can play my games on at a good speed and graphically good , prefer FPS games but hoping the unit will last 6 or 7 years

You could reuse some parts, typically the case, hard drives or PSU that would save some money

It's M-ATX as that's my preference.

Some points:

- The AiO isn't necessary so you could save £20 by going with a Peerless Assassin or similar.
- The 7600X3D is a great gaming CPU, but you could bump up to the 9800X3D for another £120 and get the best, or save roughly £100 by dropping down to a 9600/7600 and still have a very capable processor.
- A regular midi-tower could be built for a similar cost if you're not into M-ATX.
- I've not included Windows, it massively eats into your budget when purchased retail, it's extremely easy to install via USB and keys can be had for a tenner.
- There will be a build fee, but you'll get store warranty etc and it should still be less than £2000.

The Antec CX600 is a dual chamber where the fan is on the outside panel and room for a 240mm PSU aparenty which sits side on on a small ledge, the Lian Li Edge should if anything be easier than a standard ATX as it's edge connection is simply side on and easy to access. It's one on a shortlist for my lads upgrades next year if he decides to replace the NZXT C750.

Certainly a nice range of PSU's if reviews and pictures are anything to go by, reasonably priced too.

With SuperDee's build, I would prefer a 7800X3D over the 7600X3D and run it with an air cooler and Lian Li Edge Gold 850w PSU which is only £10 more, simply for the headroom and any future upgrade.

Though we still do not know what monitor or resolution your running which is kind of critical when advising on a CPU/GPU.

With a game like Elden Ring you could be hitting 90fps maybe even over 100fps at 1440p with a 7600x and 9060 XT 16gb, and also be capable of running some games at 4k on high settings too.And if you play at 1080p with no cares you may never need more.

I myself am not a fan of RGB, though I do not mind a static glow, I also feel I am missing out by having never owned a Thermalright cooler, but these are all the rage, more popular than oversized kids trampoline's in a housing estate, and from what I have read an AIO is pretty much overkill for some of these AMD processors, and more of an aesthetic.

At £350 I'd argue the 7800X3D is a poor price point, I'd personally rather save £70 in favour of the 7600X3D or spend the extra £50 on the 9800X3D.

Yeah you could, it all depends on what you value. All the X3D CPU's currently have good savings.

But we still do not know at what resolution the OP is playing. A 9800X3D is giving zero performance over a 7600x if you take Hardware Unboxed CPU/GPU scaling articles to heart and play Elden Ring at 4k 60hz on a TV.

Sale prices play a big part as does actual monitor and games played.
