What film did you watch last night?

Caught Stealing - 7/10.

I quite enjoyed this for what it is. It's funny as the film is set in the 90's, but it actually feels like a film that was made in the 90's - which I see as a good thing.

The Witch: Part 1 - The Subversion (on Amazon)

It’s a good job that the ‘part 1’ bit wasn’t obviously shown on the Amazon landing page… or I’ve have passed on the title alone. Surely one of the worst film names ever!

Anyway - it’s about a Korean girl that escapes from a secret facility when very young and finds her past catching up with her.

S’alright! Feels a little bit like the Bourne Identity mixed with a ridiculous ‘anime’-style overlay. Some of the villain characters are pure anime posturing ham, in a very fun way.

As for distracting aspects, the humour is a bit strange but I always find that with Korean films. The ‘sidekick’ wasn’t endearing in the slightest… not sure what they were going for with that.

6/10 - Was good enough for watching whilst having a sofa chat with the Mrs. and I’d happily watch the second one.

The Founder - 6.5/10

Quite an enjoyable drama behind the origins and rise of McDonalds. Not quite as good as Tetris or Blackberry, but if you liked those films this is well worth watching.

Mission Impossible - The Final Borefest - 4/10.

Four points just for the plane stunts near the end. Otherwise, pants and too long.

Euro Trip (on… some streaming platform)

2000s teen comedy in which an American sets off on a quest (with his friends) to meet his German e-pen pal who he suddenly realises is a beautiful girl.

Some of this has aged like milk (the crass objectification / exploitation of women, the odd joke showing racial insensitivity - each typical of the time period) but otherwise…

… good lord this is a supremely funny film :D

It’s always been one of my favourites for its silliness and it remains a bombardment of chaotic, ‘messing around’ fun. It’s neatly balances out rinsing European cultures with American ignorance.

It’s tough to pick a favourite moment, but “Mi scuzi!” on the train is classic

8.5/10 - great fun and much funnier than the rest of the genre IMO.

They just don't make teen comedies like that anymore, American Pie etc. Late 90s in to early 2000s were peak for that genre

Not seen yet but the other three MI films directed by Christopher McQuarrie sent me to sleep so not in any great hurry to do so.

It's a pity the franchise became wedded to McQuarrie. The first few were entertaining and had their own unique flavour from the different range of directors.

Good Fortune - 6/10
Body swap comedy, with poor guy living the life of a rich guy after Keanu Reeves angel decides to show him the grass isn't always greener (it is), hilarity doesn't ensue. Whilst topical as regards the cost of living crisis, the gig economy and AI stealing jobs, it's not subtle about it and falls mostly flat though does have some nice bits to it.

That's disappointing! I was looking forward to that.
