Optical drives comeback in Japan !!

I still use an external burner and buy blank disks from time to time :D something very nostalgic about the whole thing.

Even my PC I built in 2020 still had a DVD-R. Just in case.

Not sure I could bring myself to not have one, but perhaps my next system will rely on an external drive, given how much rarely it'll be used...

I still have a 5.25" BD drive in the bits draw, three assorted USB drives and masses of CD, DVD and BD blanks. I can't remember when I last burned an optical disc although the USB drives do get used to read the occasional audio CD or film DVD. I think I'm about to clear a cupboard in my work room.....

If the internet keeps on the trajectory it's going with overbearing rules and restrictions, and always online/DRM type copy protection keeps proliferating I think it'll spur on crackers to up their game and go back to old school methods of distribution.

Up the Medway Boys, Pompey Pirates and Automation. :D

*unpacking intensifies*

I still have my old internal BR drive installed 'cos I'm old school and the fact that dad still wants 'custom' CD's ripped for his car stereo CD. Got about 3 internal DVD drives kicking about as well. Tried to punt one of them at a Local Boot sale as 'vintage tech' but to no avail. :(

Having just seen this thread I think I can confidently stay I don't own a 5.25" drive of any kind these days, yet still hold on to a 3.5" drive "just in case". Not sure why.

I've got a Pioneer BDR-XD05TB external Blu-Ray burner that I bought in September 2019. Last time I used it I burnt a Windows 11 install DVD and when it came to installing it, it froze during the install.

Used a USB thumb drive instead and then the install completed successfully. So much for burning discs eh!

I’ve got a Blu-ray writer and a blu-ray/hddvd reader in my PC. Recently I was ripping my DVDs so it’s been used but I would just use a usb stick for an OS install, much quicker and easier than burning a disc…

Probably should pull the HDDVD drive out but I haven’t got round to it.

I’m pretty sure I have a USB Blu-ray drive and even USB floppy drive kicking around somewhere.

That could have been down to poor quality media or burning too fast. Maybe even the drive reading the disk was at fault. Pioneer is a solid brand so doubt it was the burner you got.

For installing an OS, a USB flash drive is the way to go but. So much quicker.
