For the people who remember 3DFX

My first ever PC upgrade was a a Voodoo 1, I can't remember though if it were an Orchid Righteous or a Diamond Monster. What I do remember was being excited when I got it but soon got frustrated when I couldn't get it to work. When I did eventually sort out the driver's, the API extensions (who remembers Glide?) and finding some games and demos that were compatible I was blown away by the quality of the visuals.

I think those experiences even though frustrating can be valuable, I gained a lot of knowledge back then from troubleshooting stuff like that which has wider application.

I remember the half panic/excitement of forking out the cash for my 3DFX, I think it was an Orchid Righteous. I think I had a Voodoo 3 at one point as well but moved quickly on to a TNT2 Ultra.

Absolutely this. So much time spent investigating memory management problems, interrupts, conflicts etc. Taught me so much about computers from having zero knowledge. Having bought my first pc in 1994 with modem access via CompuServe, I spent more time searching bulletin boards for advice than gaming on reflection!

I was a tech journalist at the time and managed to get two Voodoo 2 12MB in SLI for free way back then! Went to Digital Image Design in Warrington to Interview them about F22 Air Dominance fighter (their new game) and they wheeled out gameplay showing a demo of Wargasm playing on a projector 10 feet square. Loads of tanks, infantry and APCs with attack helicopters speeding in, I was utterly dumbfounded, speechless.
my mate did some work on F22 back in the day, mostly bug testing it in summer hols from uni but also on the credits for it for designing some missions and doing some other bits and bobs.

I bought a canopus 3dfx card. I paid a small fortune to have it imported from the states because it had a whopping 6mb of ram (up from standard 4mb iirc)

I worked in the local PC World in the mid to late 90s and remember feeling a certain sense of awe when all the very pretty 3Dfx graphics card boxes arrived in the warehouse - mostly over the price... I could never afford one and was always jelous of those who could. The Riva 128 was my first proper 3D card (STB Velocity maybe?) which seemed to be significantly less money for almost as good gaming graphics (or so i convinced myself). If only I'd had the sense to buy a few shares in the company behind that card at the time!!!

A friend of mine was also friends with DiD and a big air combat fan.

I still remember picking up my Voodoo 3 from a stack of boxes in Game. Good old days when you could see stuff in a shop :) I think it was about £100 at the time, was loads of money!

I loved my 3DFX but when the time eventually came to upgrade I got a TNT. whilst it was a better card I missed the glide support of screamer.... rally I think (there were a few in the series). I loved that game . a chap was working on a wrapper for glide to D3D so I ended up gifting him my copy of the game in the hope he could get it running with hardware support on direct 3D cards not sure if he ever managed it as I ended up moving on. great game tho.
