The Sony A73/A7R3/A7S3/A9 Thread

A7V supposedly spotted in the wild, Sony Alpha Rumours reckon an announcement next month with release early next year. Comments on the article don't sound very encouraging, I'm out of the loop when it comes to mirrorless E-mount. Have they dropped the ball in recent years or market/technology saturated?

They dropped the ball on the RX1R III that's for sure, that was a parts bin camera, but the A74 was well received and the A9III with the global sensor was also well received.

What I think we are in a shock for is the price. TheA73 was £2k....I would be surprise if this one isn't £3k now.

But even the IQ on the A73 is still amazing, the AF holds up still. There are quality of life improvements on new bodies like wireless tether shooting, better menus, better EVF and LCD, more frame rates....but the actual IQ hasn't really got that much better and most of it is still down to your skill and the lens you are using.

Thanks @Raymond Lin, was surprised to see the A7IV selling for £2,100 and that was on sale, 4 years after release! My almost brand new but second hand A7iii was £1,100 3 yeas after release.

A7iii still holding strong, might go for a new 35mm lens or something wide instead.

I'm looking at getting the Sony 35mm f1.4 GM soon £810, I'd love the Sigma ART II bit it's a lot of extra money.

Yo! Brand new? That seems a cracking price for a GM. Sigma that much better? And probably twice the size going off a Sigma I had for my D5200.

Prices on Sony bodies recently seem particularly strong to me. Mine had to be repaired a few weeks back in Hoi An for the octopus cable, but looking about even there they commanded high prices. Replacing my A7R2 would cost the same or more than when I got mine in Jan 24!

Yep £809.
Thanks, think I've found the one you mean.

Random general question for the thread. Have you ever had your Sony camera serviced? Had mine 4-5 years now and it was already 1-2 years old when bought. Wondered if there was any benefit to having a service.

Never had any camera serviced, and I've had a lot.

Especially these days, there isn't even a mirror, the only moving part is the shutter curtain, the rubber shutter membrane and those dials and joystick. They can't really service those besides replacing the part, you might as well wait until it breaks and then have the part replaced.

What do you think needs servicing, only thing I can think of is cleaning the sensor, but you only do that if it needs it.

You could ask them (Sony service) to clean the camera ie take it apart and clean under the dials etc which can be points of ingress and build up for dust/sand in particular, but the shooting conditions you regularly encounter will give you an idea of whether or not that is worth itt. Best bet is getting something like a fine soft brush (like a blusher brush) and a rocket blower and cleaning the camera (body) yourself.

Thanks. I do sensor cleaning myself and sounds like it's not worth servicing. I do have a rare issue where it has a problem with the most recently taken photo and says the SD card is corrupt and needs repairing (this has been across different branded cards). A few back and forths eventually resolves it. And annoyingly someone knocked into my friend spilling a strawberry cocktail all over it recently so the battery and card doors don't open as easily. Alcohol wipes (for the body), a brush and my electric air blower sounds good enough.

Just checked shutter count, almost at 70k (think it was on 15-20k when purchased) so plenty of life left in it.

That is not an isolated thing, it's a Sony thing. Once I started connecting the camera to a computer directly to download images and thus never taking cards out of the camera the problem went away. It's a bit slower than using a card reader, no big deal (for me).

Impressed with Cotswold ordered the 35mm GM on the 22nd and it arrived today 27th, three working days.
Looking forward to giving it a go soon.
