The Sony A73/A7R3/A7S3/A9 Thread

My wife's best friend from school has decided to get married in South Africa at New Year's (who does that!?).

Doubtful I'll get another chance like this to go on a safari. I won't be able to afford buying a telephoto lens nor justify it for just that trip, so renting one is the realistic option (providing I'm allowed to take abroad). I'm naturally gravitating towards the Sony GM 70-200 2.8 which I've used once for a wedding and loved it (I believe there's a MKII now). Or as I've just read above, should I consider others like the GM 300 2.8?

Edit - on a A7iii

Depends how close you’re realistically allowed to get, 200-600 is a good shout too.

Sigma just announced a 500mm f5.6 lens

Unsure about distances as we have no idea what kind of safari we'll be doing other than the guided ones in an open truck, so assume tens to hundreds of meters. Thanks - will look into the Sigma (gonna be a brute isn't it :p).

If you’re only looking at 1 lens then I’d consider a zoom. If you went with the 70-200 then consider taking a teleconverter too that way you could have up to 400mm. Otherwise the Sony 200-600 is a good lens.

Hhhhmm should I be worried about my beloved A7iii? Was at a work event and it had issues writing to the memory card and needed to perform some operation to remedy it. Only problem was it didn't work and rejecting it wasn't an option either, I swapped cards but it didn't like that either.

This is has happened a few times now with this set of memory cards and I had similar issues with a previous set of cards, thinking it was the cards themselves. It is my 40th this year....................;)

What brands were the memory cards?

Checking my crystal ball, I think I can see a Sony A1 in your future. :)
Ha I wish and probably an overkill. Not sure the A7IV is much of a significant upgrade from the III and very much out of the loop when it comes to the Sony mirrorless ecosystem. Google suggests others have had memory card issues and with certain brands, starting to get a little nervous on its readability.

It actually is a pretty significant upgrade from the a7iii, it is still the latest hybrid model with no a7v due until at least 2025. It has a completely redesigned menu system, 30% more megapixels, better AF, it's pretty much better in every way, although it is a few years old itself now, the a7cii might be worth a look though, it's basically the a7iv in a smaller body but with the new AI autofocus chip for even better / faster AF.

What's the current go to for Sony flash? Are Sony themselves worth the investment over a budget brand? I've got about a £250 budget.

I've had no end of issues with some of these Lexar cards. I was beginning to think it was just me.

Cheers @Raymond Lin any one stand out in particular, I can see the V860II and III

I haev the V860II and the V1 (round head). The advantage of the V860II is the bounce card and the advantage of the V1 is it has built in modelling light. It can act as like a continuous light (not as powerful as a flash though), it's so you can see where the shadows are going to fall.

In a studio the V1 is more useful, but on a dancefloor or outside, the bounce card is more useful.
