Got a 9800x3d coming tomorrow upgrading from the 7700x

I'm guessing it's not a simple remove and replace will a cmos reset be needing after replacement

Been ages since ive done a cpu upgrade
Can I ask where people are getting 5800X3D's from, are they all second hand now?

Edit - please obviously don't name competitors, the question is really are they only available in the second hand market?

Edit I have completely missed read this in a no coffee yet state, sorry lol

Be good to know if you notice much of a temperature difference during normal use on Windows and in games. As I was saying, the 7700x and 9700x looked hotter than the 9800X3D in the videos I was finding.

Idle temps are higher 47c compared to 40c but under load with an undervolt the temps are lower very rarely see a above 60c average is 55c compared to 75c

This is air cooled

I upgraded from a 7800X3D to a 9800X3D. Temps are lower and it doesn't spike into the mid 80s like my 7800X3D did!

Thanks, decided either will be fine. 9700x in stock 65W mode should be perfect and can always increase PPT using PBO if I've more headroom than I thought. If I'm feeling fancy, a secondhand 9800X3D would be be great, and a mild reduction in PPT is possible if required.

Which games out of interest?
Only 6 weeks to reply! Sorry, was away and then had some unexpected mess to deal with.

I will very happily lower my settings and use DLSS to increase my frame rates, and so inevitably end up CPU bound. I primarily play FPS games. BF6 for example, I can get to 200-225ish FPS but not a stable 240fps. Same for the most recent Cod beta from memory. Otherwise, AAA and single player games can sometimes be cpu-bound for me as well.

It was such a long time that I forgot what I ever asked you, and I also sprouted multiple grey pubes during that time. :p

Different take using DLSS which gives interesting results.

Something I said awhile back - due to the problems of getting consistent results a lot of testers were doing tests in relatively simple scenarios where the X3D cache could flex but in chaotic large scale action it can't be utilised as effectively, in large scale action with vehicles, etc. rather than just a chaotic street scene substitute the averages may also go the other way - though it seems they've optimised it a bit more than the beta so that might no longer be true.

I wouldn't mind going to an Intel platform for my next build but that power draw is crazy. Over double the 9800X3D power consumption in that video for the most part.

14900k is, using a 265k / 285k is closer to AMD power draw.
Yeah, closer but it's still ever so slightly more on my 265k - although heavily dependent on what res I'm playing at.

I can push close to 170w on the 265k if I go balls out at 1080p - but if I'm playing more at my usual 1440p then it's around the 110-130w mark so only marginally above the 9800X3D in this game.

First time I've ever seen my 9800X3D hit above 100w though playing BF6!

Yes but those are slower than 14th gen for gaming right? I will see how their next gen CPUs do :D

Yeah typically slower than the 14700K even, potentially with fancy RAM and latest BIOS/APO can beat the 14700K, though all of them more or less even out for performance as you progress towards higher settings and resolution, unless you are using a 5090 and CPU bound again.

EDIT: I'm a bit annoyed, though not surprised, Intel hasn't put more effort into APO as there are quite a few games where it can provide a significant performance increase in theory.

I have a thermalright assassin x 120 refined se currently with a Ryzen 7600 and its doing amazingly. I haven't installed the new CPU yet because I'm worried that my cooler might too underpowered for a 9800x3d. I searched online for benchmarks for my cooler and I can only find this Tomshardware review: https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/air-cooling/thermalright-assassin-x-120-r-se-review , but they were using an i7-14700K to test the cooler I have. So, I'm wondering if this cooler can handle a 9800x3d ? I only do gaming and browsing on my PC.
