BMW and M Power Owners

64d had major service a few weeks ago, had advisory that front discs and pads were on limit and needed swapping, car is going soon so decided to hold off and see if light comes on

Took it for MOT today, clean pass, said to bloke who did it that I was expecting an advisory on front discs/pads and he said what? there's about 50% left on them

Of course I doubt this would come as a shock to anyone

Can’t you look at them yourself ? I don’t really get this. Petrolheads who mod cars yet can’t check a fundamental part of the car themselves.

Sorry but this is safety critical like tyres and you can’t check them yourself?

if I got down to check them I'd never get back up again ;)

j/k they looked fine in as much as my knowledge is worth

Wooooooosh.....
you could argue that tail first , your watching dashcam would have better visibility for capturing an incident (over a rear cam);
breaching white line too can cause penalties in some (norfolk) car parks too - not like the yellow line though.

Weirdly brake wear sensor on the rear has not come on, last time BMW done an inspection they said it was urgent i do them asap (i knew anyway) they looked low, but they look probably low enough to short the sensor wire, however idrive is still reporting it as ok. and im not getting any issues. no noises.

Im going to get the rear discs and pads and new sensor wire done soon when im back from work trip.

Oddly enough I had the opposite experience with my local BMW dealer. It went in for its service in May and I was expecting to be told it needed new discs all around as you can clearly see a ~1mm lip on them, but nope. Was told they were 'getting low' but still absolutely fine. I need to measure them myself again now just to make sure, although I doubt they will have gone that much lower as I'm only doing about 5k miles a year at the moment.

Anyone got personal experience of getting rid of RFTs?
I am debating going to standard tyres on my 330e as people are saying they feel much better, and they are also considerably cheaper!
My car has no room for a spare, so aside from having to use recovery in the case of an tyre blowout, is there anything else to consider?

Its a staggered 792m alloy with 225/40/19 front and 255/35/19 rear

I would also be doing the rear axle first then later the fronts when they are worn out.

Picking up my new car in the morning. 71 plate 128ti in Misano Blue.
I hope you enjoy it. But please say that you're fully aware it's FWD?

Do it, RFT's are awful, and always crack wheels, it's just a matter of when, plus being an 'e' I imagine yours is a heavy barge, so it's really asking to crack them.

The only thing you can do, is find another 5x120 space saver from a different car with the right centre bore and just put it in the boot - IIRC there was a website that actually makes/sells space savers for cars that don't come with them. That or just buy the smallest wheel that will clear your brakes off another model, again with the correct CB.

No boot recess for the wheel in a 330e :(
Not really willing to drag it around in the boot taking up the usable space. Its the main reasons i got the estate, to counter the smaller boot on the saloon with the battery!

Same, but it just has to go in the boot, and it's a case of 'it is what it is' or risk it :(
I rarely use my boot in my coupe TBH :P It just has a crate with spare fluids/coolant, some tools, ice scraper etc :D
If you've got a touring, then it's a must to use all the space, all the time

Yep fully aware, especially as going from a 64 plate M135i
Cool, sorry I didn't mean to sound like you were thick or anything :P
Just it's something people usually don't think of when they think BMW, so I would have been gutted for you, if someone hadn't told you, should you have not known :)

Good point, I do use the boot a lot, and often the dog is in there too.
I think I will get a kit, leave it in the garage. If I have the roof box on, long trip, and no dog in the boot I can always chuck it in. I have 2 full sized spares for the wife's Corsa in the garage already :D
Additionally I have been paying for recovery for years and never used it!

As long as you have decent breakdown cover and look after your tyres by regularly checking tread, sidewalls, pressures etc, I wouldn't overly worry. It's not as if a can of gunk is any use in a lot of situations.

Whilst I agree, it's one of those sods law situations, where you could end up at roadside for hours waiting for them to turn up, just to change a tyre/wheel, or be recovered because of it - personally, that would annoy me, a lot, because I could have fixed it myself.
I'm fine when it's something past my pay grade, but that's not much, and if I can carry a spare part/tools, 'just incase', I always do.
So it's a bit of a double edged sword/annoyance :P
