MSI MAG Tomahawk X870/X870E Owners Thread

V1.A65

I tell a lie, it didn't fix it completely, but weirdly if Borderlands 4 does crash on the first run, a PC restart solves that and allows me to play for hours on end with no issues.

Hi folks I have the MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk motherboard and a Lian Li 011 EVO Case and an EVGA FTW3 Ultra RTX 3080 with a hybrid kit.

On this motherboard the GPU interferes with the USB 3.1 Type C Front Panel connector because MSI put the connector in the wrong place since they added their own properiarty EZConn where it should be. I bought an adapter which does fit the port and the cable from the motherboard but unfortunately the motherboard cable is so thick and angled the wrong way that it interferes with my side radiator and fan now.

I was thinking of getting some sort of right angled male to female cable but it's hard to find one, what did everyone else do to solve this problem?

Edit: Seems like Asrock had a similar issue in the past and they offered free cables https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/cypp4x/got_my_free_cable_from_asrock_to_fix_the_design/

Hi

I have MSI X870 Tomahawk and Patriot 6400 memory. After XPO setting or in my case Hynix tight timing set and the board has memory trained
I set the following:- Memory Context Restore to Auto and Memory Change detected to Disable.
I now only very occasionally have a long boot which I assume is memory training but now I am very happy with this board.

Just bought a bundle of the X870E Tomahawk Mag and 9800X3D for £689.99 I hope I wasn't ripped lol. I've been after a X870E motherboard and to get the 9800X3D too I thought was pretty good deal. Considering the other options were Asus Rog strix X870e-e or the Hero both of which are pretty expensive I thought I'd go for this.

Actually it's not an amazing deal but it'll still be a decent platform though.

I paid five pence less and order arrived in time from overclockers. I was very happy. I bought the memory elsewhere but it never turned up. So once the memory became available from overclockers I bought it and it turned up the next day.

Yeah ordered mine from the other place just because I saw bundle and me being me re acted straight away without actually thinking and ordered lol. Still I'm sure it'll be a decent combo. Been after the 9800X3D for ages even though at 4K I will see next to no performance uplift compared to my 7800X3D but I'm hoping for better lows a bit smoother gameplay maybes? I'm clutching at straws here. Suppose I can sell of my old CPU and motherboard to soften the blow.

So any feedback on the Mag X870E motherboard? Are people happy with it?
The positioning of the usb c front panel connector is the only issue I have with it. Other than that it works fine for me. I have 6000 cl26 ram and it booted expo first time with none of that minutes of memory training faff I've seen on YouTube.

Today I went to install an extra NIC and found an issue with the design of the x870e.

The supplementary PCI power connector at the bottom of the board is in the way of the last PCIe slot!!
With my GPU in slot 1, I have no accessible slots!

The MSI x870 design is such a joke, inaccessible usb c front panel connector and now an inaccessible pcie power connector too...

I just wish other boards didn't use chipset for M.2. next time I will pay extra attention before buying a motherboard.

As far as I remember it just recognized my 9800X3D out of the box (do flash a newer bios afterwards for improved compatibility and memory performance etc).

I've got 1 CPU 8pin plugged in and the PCIE header at the bottom as well.

System worked fine previously without having the PCIE at the bottom plugged in (and it's still very unclear what it actually does in the day-to-day running of the system, tbh), but I figured I'd distribute the wattage, since I've got a pretty hefty GPU (5080).

(edit: talking about the X870 here, not the E-version)
As I understand it, the purpose of the PCIe header at the bottom is to provide an extra 150W to a PCIe device, over and above the 75W the slots provide natively...;) Yes, I know that is woefully underwhelming as far as information is concerned, but I'll look for the info I read about it and post a link here if I can find it again. I thought it was something I didn't need, and so I've never used it. No problems thus far.
