9800X3D RAM buying guide by Buildzoid

i got really lucky with this ram in the ocuk b grade section so i couldnt say no especially given it was a week or so ago and well yeah getting ram relatively cheap at this point in time it was sort of a sensible idea lol
worst case i need to try a different board i guess lol
thanks btw apreciate it :-)

Just do a BIOS update when you get the board is all. It should be fine.

so the question is do I probably need to wiat for a qvl on the motherboard im hoping for/choose a different board that this kit is on the qvl for?
im guessing this is a how long is a piece of string question but worth at least asking lol
Early B650/X670 boards did have issues with 24/48GB sticks, but I'd expect any B850/X870 board to be ready "out of the box".

awesome
yeah i think i already mentioned a million times what board i want so hopefully il be fine
if not il have to use it as an excuse to build a second pc or something
maybe the dog fancies an am5 build with 96gb of ram or something lol
but awesome its nice to be reassured lol

You need a good quality board that offers good signalling between CPU and memory. The chipset is pretty much immaterial, but I think people with budget boards might struggle.

Yeah, I don't mean if they work with 192/256, only if they recognise/operate stably with any of the 24/48 sticks. Early B650/X670 boards needed BIOS updates, but B850/X870 should already have those updates.

this is going to sound like a really dumb question but here goes
motherboard qvl lists............
ive got a 2x48gb corsair 6000 cl30 kit sat on my desk awaiting my am5 upgrade
so in the next couple of weeks a motherboard and hopefully 9800x3d will be added thus meaning il be in the position to jump to am5
the motherboard i rather want and am hoping is about to arrive on our shores [the sapphire pure b580a] doesnt actually have a qvl as of now...........
it does seem to come up in a fair few motherboard qvls im not sure with ddr5 whether its the cpu or the motherboard or in fact both that mostly
dictate what ram will and wont work............

well I wasn't planning on upgrading to AM5 until the new year but with how RAM prices are going and unlikely to change for a year or so I took the plug to get a DDR5 kit,

didn't intent to get a 2x32gb kit but with when I saw a 6400mhz kit (granted with CL40) for £199 I hedged my bets, and hoping I tighten up the timings after reducing the clock to 6000mhz, not that I think it make a massive difference with a 9800x3d TBD.

Still going to grab a 9800x3d next time one comes up on MM or there's a killer deal etc

I went with 2x16Gb Klevv Cras 5 6000 C28 for £112. I'm told their parent company is Hynix and it is a Hynix A chip in them. They tighten up nicely and thanks to @Alexrose1uk for the tip off on this RAM and pointers on tuning.

Klevv is owned by Hynix, a bit like Crucial are owned by Micron. Yes, you can get a faulty kit off them, and they're not always the best specced kit, but at the same time they're sometimes great value on decent rated dies when they want to move volume, you just have to be careful to make sure you get a decent specced set, rather than one that features more OEM-grade memory bins.
I wouldnt write them off if they're the right price and specification, the only thing you're paying for with a bigger brand is 'fancier' software...which might be garbage like Corsair's, or better/easier warranty support (which can be worth it at the right price...) :)

I remember seeing them I think as far back as mid-late DDR3 days, but they were always one of those seemingly rainforest generic brands, so I never looked into them until more recently when they became a bit more prominent, and realised they're actually a Hynix sub-brand; and recently they've been very competitively priced sometimes (I've seen them 2/3 of the price of bigger brands at points, which is a substantial difference); of course it does help that Hynix A-Die is amongst the most recommended DDR5 memory types right now, and for obvious reasons they have access to bucket loads of the stuff lol

same i mean on paper my am4 rig is still doing most of what i need but new shiney thing go brrrrrr lol
well and the cache is useful for some of the workloads i do and better single core/thread performance being higher on the newer gen and x3d
but kinda might as well do it now before things get even more unaffordable i guess lol

What the hell is going on with memory prices. Back in January I bought some c30 expo for £90, speccing an upgrading for my son this Christmas and the same matched pair is listing at £350!

How important are c30 timings with a 9800x3d? is anyone running anything else and noticed a big difference?

Demand for RAM from AI companies is the reason. Many startups and companies like Google are all building bigger and bigger AI systems.

Just get the cheapest RAM you can find as it won’t make much difference with an X3D CPU.

CL30 RAM is better quality but not compulsory

Thanks man, that's good to know. I just went for some 5600 which was more than half the price. Have to keep in mind that i'm not buying for myself sometimes, and that ~3% perf difference doesn't matter to most people.

Yeah and buying any RAM now is better than not being able to buy any RAM later on and you can always upgrade down the road.
